Eagles could lose key member of Super Bowl team?

The Philadelphia Eagles have managed to retain some key players in the wake of their Super Bowl LIX win over the Kansas City Chiefs, but there is reportedly a chance they will lose one important piece of their offense.

Veteran tight end Dallas Goedert has been a significant contributor in Philadelphia's passing game over the past several seasons. He is entering the final year of a four-year, $57M extension he signed with the Eagles in 2021. Goedert has no guaranteed money remaining on his deal.

Goedert may seek an extension, which is one reason he is facing an uncertain future in Philly. During the latest episode of his "unCovering the Birds" podcast on Wednesday, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer said he recently spoke with an NFL agent who was "convinced" Goedert will not be back with the Eagles next season.

"I could see things coming to a head. Because Goedert could have more value on the open market than the Eagles might be willing to pay considering their cap situation," McLane said, via Bleeding Green Nation. "So, I sent a few messages to sources, one who verified Goedert by no means is a slam dunk to return to Philly for an eighth season."

Goedert had 42 catches for 496 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season despite missing seven games. The 30-year-old played an even bigger role during the playoffs.

In four postseason games, Goedert had 17 catches for 215 yards and a touchdown. He has been a solid safety valve for Jalen Hurts, and the Eagles do not have an obvious replacement on their roster. Third-year tight end Grant Calcaterra played in all 17 games this season but caught just 24 total passes.

The Eagles could free up salary-cap space by designating Goedert a post-June 1 cut, but that would leave a hole in their offense. They have already shown a commitment to keeping their championship core together, so that theme may continue with Goedert.
