Tiger Woods suffered a ruptured Achilles while training for his return to the golf course. The 15-time major championship winner underwent surgery on Tuesday and will be out indefinitely.
"As I began to ramp up my own training and practice at home, I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured," Woods wrote in a statement posted to X on Tuesday afternoon. "I am back home now and plan to focus on my recovery and rehab, thank you all for the support."
Dr. Charlton Stucken, who performed the surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida, said the procedure "went smoothly, and we expect a full recovery," according to the statement.
Woods was preparing to make his 2025 debut on April 10 at The Masters, a tournament he's won five times in his illustrious career. After this devastating setback, it's fair to question whether the golf legend will ever be able to play on the PGA Tour again.
Woods was already struggling to walk 18 holes before suffering a ruptured Achilles. That's what happens when you undergo six separate back surgeries in 10 years, most recently in September 2024. Not only that, but Woods also has a rod, pins and screws holding his right leg together stemming from the single-car crash in February 2021.
Woods has played in only 11 PGA Tour events since the 2021 car crash, and he either missed the cut or withdrew in seven of them. Now he's likely out for the rest of the 2025 season, as a ruptured Achilles can take as long as a year to fully heal.
This could spell the end of Woods' iconic career.
