Why 49ers' Brock Purdy may not sign contract extension anytime soon

San Francisco 49ers reporter Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group previously suggested the club should get a contract extension done with starting quarterback Brock Purdy at some point between now and "right after" the 2025 NFL Draft concludes on April 26.

While negotiations could drag on into the summer months, NFL insider Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports shared in a piece updated on Thursday evening why 49ers fans shouldn't be too concerned about the team's quarterback situation.

"Fox Sports has learned that both sides are actively negotiating with the intent to finalize a deal before the 2025 season," Schultz said about the 49ers and Purdy. "Could it happen before next month's draft? It's possible, but as one league source put it, 'There's not a rush.'"

While Purdy is currently on track to play on the final year of his inexpensive rookie contract, he theoretically could stay away from the club through the offseason program until he receives the extension he's earned via his play.

Some have wondered if head coach Kyle Shanahan and/or general manager John Lynch view recently signed signal-caller Mac Jones as a potential replacement for Purdy, but there's no indication that's the case.

"I really just think Kyle and John want to get this done," a general manager told Schultz about the 49ers locking Purdy down. "The final number will be tricky, but the cap is rising, and the quarterback market is only going up."

In an article published on Tuesday, Inman poured cold water over the idea that the 49ers could make a surprise move and sign free agent Aaron Rodgers. Shanahan was once interested in bringing Rodgers to San Francisco, but that was back in 2021.

Rodgers is expected to sign with either the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Minnesota Vikings if he doesn't retire.

"Let's be clear," Schultz added. "This is Purdy's team, and Jones is strictly there as a backup. His addition will have no bearing on Purdy's impending extension."

Nothing's for sure until Purdy puts pen to paper on a deal, but it sounds like individuals associated with both parties want it known that the 25-year-old will be the 49ers QB1 beyond the 2025 season.
