Patriots share encouraging update on star DT who sat out with blood clots

New England Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore missed the majority of the 2024 season due to a recurring blood clot issue, but it appears he is trending in the right direction.

Barmore participated in the first day of the Patriots' voluntary offseason workout program on Monday. The team shared a photo on social media that showed Barmore lifting dumbbells in the weight room.

Those who have followed Barmore's career know how much of a welcome sight that was.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said recently that the team is "going to have a great plan" for Barmore and monitor the 25-year-old closely. The fact that Barmore is back in the weight room preparing for the season is a great sign.

The Patriots announced during training camp last year that Barmore had been diagnosed with blood clots and needed to spend time in the hospital undergoing tests. Barmore returned in Week 11, but he experienced symptoms again and was shut down for the remainder of the season.

Before he experienced the health issue, Barmore had been one of New England’s best defensive players. He signed a four-year, $83M extension prior to last season. The former Alabama star had the best season of his young career in 2023 with 8.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits, which were both career-highs.

If Barmore can get back to full strength and avoid setbacks, he should play a significant role in Vrabel's defense.
