Key Oilers defenseman expected to miss extended time

The Oilers won’t have key two-way defenseman Mattias Ekholm available when they begin their first-round playoff series next weekend. He aggravated his undisclosed injury early in Friday's win over the Sharks and could even be ruled out for the season once testing is complete, Ryan Rishaug of TSN reports.

Ekholm had missed seven games with an undisclosed injury before returning against San Jose. Shortly before that, he’d missed six games with an illness. The stalwart Swede has only been available for five games since March 4. They’ve still managed to go 8-5-0 without him, though. It’s unclear when Ekholm sustained the injury against the Sharks, but he left after three shifts and only logged 1:52 of ice time.

There’s a strong argument to be made that Ekholm is Edmonton’s most crucial defenseman at even strength. He’s had another dominant season with his usual partner, Evan Bouchard, controlling 59.5% of expected goals as a pair (per MoneyPuck). When paired with Brett Kulak in Bouchard’s absence, their xG share drops to 57.1%. Offensively, he’s continued to hover above his career average as he has since the Oilers acquired him from the Predators at the 2023 trade deadline. With 9-24–33 in 65 games, he’s tied with Darnell Nurse for sixth on the team (and second among defensemen) in scoring. He’s averaged 22:12 per game, up by over a minute from last year. Most of that increase has come at even strength, although he’s also seen a small bump in his still-minimal power play deployment. He’s still managed seven power-play points (3 G, 4 A) despite averaging under a minute per game with the man advantage.

Even a best-case scenario will keep Ekholm out for “quite some time,” Rishaug writes. Reading between the lines, it’s plausible that Ekholm won’t be able to suit up against L.A. and will likely only be available to help them if they win at least one series without him.

That makes their deadline acquisition of Jake Walman from the Sharks all the more critical. Ekholm was a rock for Edmonton in last year’s run to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, ranking fourth on the team with a plus-nine rating. He contributed 5-5–10 in 25 games and averaged nearly 22 minutes per game, third on the team behind Bouchard and Connor McDavid.

Of course, Walman doesn’t have the 112 games of postseason experience that the 34-year-old Ekholm has under his belt. He’s got just one, coming as a member of the Blues in their first-round loss to the Avalanche in 2021. He’s also missed the last two games with an undisclosed injury. With Ekholm’s absence confirmed to be longer-term, it’ll be interesting to see whether Walman gets slotted in top-pairing minutes with Bouchard when he’s ready to return or if he anchors a second pairing while Nurse slots in with Bouchard.

Atlantic Notes: Lindholm, Roy, McCabe, Ekman-Larsson, Puljujarvi

Bruins center Elias Lindholm dealt with a back injury throughout his first season in Boston, he revealed to reporters at today’s exit meetings (via Ty Anderson of 98.5 The Sports Hub). He sustained it in August, and it’s what caused him to miss most of training camp before playing all 82 games for the Bruins. It should offer some explanation for his continued offensive struggles, posting 17-30–47 for a 0.57 points per game rate after signing a massive seven-year, $54.25MM deal with Boston in free agency. This year marked Lindholm’s second straight campaign with less than 20 goals after he potted 42 for the Flames in 2021-22. He remains one of the league’s better faceoff-takers with a 55.2% win rate on nearly 1,400 draws, but that alone doesn’t justify his $7.75MM cap hit without increased offensive production. Boston will hope for a rebound next year to aid in their retooling. Elsewhere in the Atlantic: Canadiens prospect Joshua Roy won’t be on their playoff roster, at least to start. The team announced that they’ve sent him to AHL Laval, which is on the verge of clinching the AHL’s regular-season title and is set to begin a playoff run themselves. The 21-year-old winger had been on Montreal’s roster since March 10 but was a healthy scratch in their final 11 games as they successfully chased a wild-card berth. A 2021 fifth-round pick, Roy ends his second NHL season with just two goals and a minus-six rating in 12 appearances. He’s been a continued first-line threat in Laval, where he scored 20-15–35 in 46 games before his most recent call-up. The Maple Leafs expect defensemen Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Jake McCabe to be available for Game 1 of their first-round series against the Senators on Sunday, head coach Craig Berube said today (via David Alter of The Hockey News). Neither will dress in tonight’s season finale against the Red Wings. OEL will end up missing the final four games of the season with an upper-body injury, while McCabe will miss a seventh straight game with an undisclosed injury. Both have been invaluable pieces of Toronto’s blue line in 2024-25, averaging north of 21 minutes per game with some of the best two-way metrics on the team. Panthers winger Jesse Puljujärvi was sent to AHL Charlotte yesterday ahead of the playoffs, but he won’t be available immediately if Florida decides to recall him during the postseason. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced they’ve suspended him for two games for an illegal check to the head of Lightning winger Mitchell Chaffee in Tuesday night’s game. It’s the first supplemental discipline of Puljujärvi’s eight-year career.

Aaron Rodgers reveals why he has not yet signed with new team

Aaron Rodgers has surprised many NFL fans by dragging his free agency out for more than a month and counting, and the star quarterback provided some insight on Thursday about why he has taken so long to reach a decision about his future. Rodgers answered some questions about his situation during a Thursday appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show." When asked about the narratives that he is holding teams up or waiting for a better offer to come along, Rodgers provided a much different explanation. Rodgers said there are issues in his personal life that have required his attention. "I’m in a different phase of my life. I’m 41 years old. I’m in a serious relationship. I have off-the-field stuff going on that requires my attention," Rodgers told McAfee. "I have personal commitments I made, not knowing what my future was going to look like after last year, that are important to me. And I have a couple people in my inner, inner circle who are really battling some difficult stuff. "So, I have a lot of things that are taking my attention — and have, beginning in really January — away from football. That’s been where I’ve been focusing most of my attention on." One theory from a prominent reporter was that Rodgers’ agent advised the former NFL MVP to drag his feet in order to create leverage. Rodgers said he has been "up front" in conversations with teams and not made any specific financial demands. He said he would even be willing to play for $10 million, which is well below market value for a starting quarterback. Rodgers did not go into detail about the issues he is dealing with in his personal life. The quarterback very subtly revealed back in December that he has a new girlfriend, though very little is known about the woman. It is unclear if any team other than the Pittsburgh Steelers has interest in Rodgers at this point. He may only have one other realistic option if he does not want to play for Mike Tomlin’s team.

'Who am I to argue': Martina Navratilova names greatest player in women's tennis history

Former world number one Martina Navratilova believes that she is the ‘greatest’ player ever in the history of women’s tennis. The 68-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest to have played the game. She stayed world number one in the singles category for 332 weeks. Navratilova has won as many as 167 titles in her career, which is the most by any player in the men’s or women’s categories. She lifted 18 Grand Slam titles in the singles category, 31 Grand Slam titles in the doubles category and 10 Grand Slam titles in the mixed doubles category. Other than that, she also lifted the WTA Tour Finals 13 times in her illustrious career. Navratilova has been recently quoted in a report by The Tennis Gazette, where she called herself the greatest player in women’s tennis ahead of the likes of former world number one Steffi Graf. The 68-year-old was of the opinion that she believed, at her best, she was capable of beating anyone. She also stated that it's hard to compare players from different eras as things have changed over the years. “Am I the greatest player that ever played the game?” she asked. “It would be hard to say no. I feel like at my best I was better than anybody else that I played against because my game was more complete, I prepared better than anybody, I knew what to do, and I had the ability to do it, I was as fast as anybody, as strong as anybody and I had more shots, and I was a better athlete than everybody. Overall, the body of work speaks for itself, the records, a lot of them happened because I played for a long time, but the quality as well as the quantity, the combination. The Grand Slams, yes, Steffi Graf won more Grand Slams, but in my day, the Grand Slams were not as important. You know, Steffi Graf says I was the greatest to ever play the game, so who am I to argue, right?”
