Carlos Alcaraz entered the final of the Barcelona Open aiming to lift the prestigious Conde de Godo trophy for the third time in his young career.
Standing in his way was Holger Rune, a familiar rival and longtime friend, just a few days older than the Spaniard. The two have shared a rich history on court since their junior days, but this time it was Rune who came out on top.
Alcaraz, hindered by physical issues in the second set, couldn’t keep pace as Rune powered through to claim the title. The Dane snapped a three-final losing streak to earn his first ATP title since April 2023, sealing a 7-6(6), 6-2 victory. It also marks his maiden ATP 500 crown and propels him back into the world’s top 10.
The final began with both players displaying strong form in a tightly contested first set. Alcaraz was the first to break, moving ahead 3-2, but inconsistency crept into his game — a recurring issue this season. Rune immediately broke back and even earned two set points at 5-4.
Alcaraz fended them off and forced a tie-break, where he initially held the upper hand. However, Rune stayed composed, edging ahead 6-4 and eventually clinching the set 8-6 in the breaker after missing earlier chances.
The second set mirrored the start of the first, but took a turn after just three games when Alcaraz called for medical assistance and left the court for treatment. He returned with renewed energy, briefly pushing Rune, but it soon became clear the effort was unsustainable.
Rune capitalized, maintaining pressure and breaking at a crucial moment. He then served out the match to love, sealing a convincing 6-2 second set and a statement win in Barcelona.
For Rune, it was a week of resurgence. For Alcaraz, a reminder that even the brightest talents must navigate the challenges of fitness and form on the long road ahead.
