Marlins are set to promote their top prospect for MLB debut

The Miami Marlins find themselves in the midst of another rebuilding process. A key part of the future core is set to make his major league debut.

According to insider Craig Mish, the Marlins are bringing catcher/first baseman Agustin Ramirez to Miami. He is expected to make his major league debut during the Marlins' upcoming homestand.

After spending four years in rookie ball, Ramirez exploded onto the prospect scene in 2024. He produced a solid .267/.358/.487 batting line in 548 plate appearances between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting 25 homers and 26 doubles while stealing 22 bases. His combination of power and steals made him a coveted trade chip, with Ramirez headlining the return when infielder Jazz Chisholm was traded to the Yankees ahead of the 2024 trade deadline.

Ramirez had a similar start in Triple-A this season. He produced a .258/.320/.500 batting line in his 75 plate appearances entering Sunday, hitting three homers and seven doubles with five steals.

Ranked as the 43rd best prospect in baseball by FanGraphs, Ramirez is lauded for his impressive bat speed and power potential. He has maintained an 11.2% walk rate during his minor league career although he has an aggressive approach at the plate. Ramirez is not a burner on the basepaths despite his stolen base totals; instead, he relies on instincts and savvy.

There are flaws in Ramirez's profile. He struggles blocking balls in the dirt and can be slow getting out of his crouch when attempting to throw out would-be base stealers. However, his offense will keep him in the lineup as Ramirez is expected to see time at catcher, first base and designated hitter for the Marlins.
