Capitals' Logan Thompson continues to foil Canadiens

Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson forgot it's no longer the regular season in his postgame news conference on Wednesday night.

"Luckily, things went my way tonight and we got the two points," Thompson told the media before his teammate, Capitals center Dylan Strome, reminded him they're in the playoffs.

Despite the slip-up, the Capitals probably don't need to worry. Thompson is clearly in postseason mode after he dazzled in a 3-1 home victory over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 2.

Against Montreal, Thompson had 25 saves on 26 shot attempts, 14 of which came in the third period, via Capitals public relations. He also made a key one-handed stop early in the third period.

With the Capitals leading 2-1, Thompson dove across the net, blocking a shot from Canadiens center Jake Evans. He insists he got lucky on the clutch play.

"I didn't save it," Thompson said, per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press. "It went off the post. I think I almost knocked it in."

While Thompson did get lucky on some of his stops, the Capitals couldn't have won Game 2 without his spectacular performance.

"[Thompson] was the difference tonight in the third: He wins us that game in the third period," Washington head coach Spencer Carbery said, via Whyno. "You could feel the building with the energy with each save. It felt like he just got bigger and bigger and bigger. He was tested. He made some huge saves in that third period to keep us in front."

The Capitals now lead the Canadiens 2-0 in the series. They'll head to Montreal for Game 3 on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.

Through the first two games of the series, Thompson has a stellar .951 save percentage. With the goalie dominating, the Canadiens may be headed toward an early postseason exit.
