Carlos Alcaraz, current World No.3 will not play in the 2025 Madrid Open this week after it was confirmed that scans showed a small tear in his right adductor muscle.
The news is a cruel blow for the Madrid Open organisers who will have pinned their hopes on the now top Spaniard after the retirement of Rafael Nadal last year.
Alcaraz has been in physical discomfort since the final of the Barcelona Open held last Sunday when he had to take a medical time out in the middle of the tie as Holger Rune scooped the title. This set off alarm bells about whether he would play at the Caja Magica.
But he still traveled to Madrid attending the Laureus Sports Awards on Monday where Rafael Nadal was given the Sporting Icon Award. Despite the insistence and effort of the four-time Grand Slam champion, he hasn't been able to train since Monday and took tests.
The tests have confirmed that the injury prevents him from competing following the doctors' recommendation to avoid aggravation of the ailment. He will now hope to be ready for Rome or will go straight into Roland Garros after such a bright start to the clay court season.
It is once again an injury that has blighted the current French Open champion and has derailed his momentum. He was due to face Zizou Bergs or Gabriel Diallo in the second round but outside another lucky loser getting a spot, it is assumed that the winner of that tie will go straight through to face Jiri Lehecka or the winner of Martin Landaluce or Cameron Norrie.
It is a decision though that likely came down to wire given Alcaraz did head to Madrid in the first place but he is now out and the field is now led by Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic.
