Bears' second-round pick completes return on trade for Bryce Young

Caleb Williams now has another big-time target to work with. The Chicago Bears selected wide receiver Luther Burden III from Missouri with the No. 39 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The pick completed the Bears' return on the 2023 blockbuster trade with the Carolina Panthers that helped bring them Williams in the first place.

Going into the 2023 draft, the Bears own the No. 1 overall pick, but because they were not quite ready to give up on then-starter Justin Fields they traded the pick to Carolina, who went on to pick quarterback Bryce Young.

In return, the Bears received wide receiver DJ Moore, two first-round picks (No. 9 overall in 2023 and what would become the No. 1 pick in 2024) and two second-round picks (2023 and 2025).

Those picks have resulted in the Bears getting Williams (No. 1 in 2024), offensive tackle Darnell Wright (No. 9 in 2023), cornerback Tyrique Stevenson (second-round pick in 2023) and now Burden III.

Along with Moore, an outstanding starting wide receiver, that is a potentially franchise-altering return for the Bears.

Ultimately, the trade will be defined by how the two No. 1 pick quarterbacks eventually develop.

After a dreadful start to his career and a benching early in Year 2, Young finally started to show some serious progress in the second half of the 2024 season. He still has a lot to prove, and he needs way more help around him, but there is at least still some hope for him to be a star for the Panthers.

Williams also had some growing pains in his first season with the Bears, but had 20 touchdowns to only six interceptions, while also posting a 46.7 QBR that was significantly higher than Young's 33.4 mark from his rookie season.

Between Moore, Rome Odunze (No. 9 pick in 2024), running back D'Andre Swift, Burden III, and this year's first-round pick, tight end Colston Loveland, they have really given him some serious talent to work with. That does not even get into the hiring of a new offensive-minded head coach in Ben Johnson.

If the Bears end up developing all of those players correctly, their franchise would be significantly better than it would have been had they simply kept the top pick in the 2023 class.
