Capitals flex their muscles, take commanding series lead vs. Canadiens

With a 5-2 win on Sunday, the Washington Capitals made anyone who thought Montreal could make a series out of their first-round matchup think again. Rebounding from a 6-3 loss on Friday night, the Capitals exploded for four third-period goals to grab a commanding 3-1 series lead against the Canadiens.

Showing their dominance as a team, Washington managed to score three goals and a couple of empty-netters without Alexander Ovechkin registering a single point. In fact, the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer was held scoreless despite registering five shots on net.

Trailing 2-1 going into the third, Washington was facing pressure to avoid letting the Canadiens, who were the Eastern Conference's final wild-card team, tie the series. But it was in that moment, the veteran Capitals cracked Montreal goaltender Jakub Dobes.

"Throughout the year, we’ve been dealt different hands. To overcome things, it’s a good mental exercise. I think we rely on each other and our game, and we feel confident," said Capitals defenseman John Carlson after the game.

First, it was Brandon Duhaime tying the game 6:39 into the third. Then, Andrew Mangiapane gave Washington its first lead of the game and the eventual game-winner 10 minutes later.

Duhaime added another as an insurance tally as Montreal left their net open to try to mount a comeback with an extra skater.

And unfortunately for the Canadiens, not only did their plan to get aggressive with three minutes left not work, they eventually saw a second puck go in an empty net when Tom Wilson triggered a celebration with one of his own in the final minute of the game.

Montreal missed two opportunities to close the weekend. They failed to win Ovechkin's worst performance of the series — he has three goals and four points on 13 total shots in the series — and they also squandered a third-period lead.

All in all, the Capitals have to feel pretty confident and comfortable that they will make quick work of the Canadiens. Washington now looks to advance and take the series in five games on Wednesday night from the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
