The Keweenaw Peninsula, located on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is one of the snowiest areas in the entire Midwest. Lake Superior is to thank.
The lake regularly produces upwards of 270 inches of snowfall across the Peninsula each year, and this winter has been particularly snowy.
As of today, April 3, 2025, the Keweenaw County Snowfall Tracker is reporting a whopping 301.25 inches of snow on the season after 6.5 inches fell on Tuesday, April 2nd. The season total is nearly a 100% increase from last year's disappointing number. Last season was one of the Keweenaw's worst with just 153.25 inches observed.
The Keweenaw County Snowfall Tracker is also reporting that an average of 34 inches of snow is currently laying on the ground. There was only 10 inches at the same time last year.

The Keweenaw Peninsula is home to Mount Bohemia, the Midwest's snowiest ski area and perhaps the country's most unique. The mountain relies 100% on natural snowfall, doesn't groom any of its trails, and has a world-class Nordic spa with a full-service bar for skiers to enjoy after slaying powder all day long.
Mount Bohemia is still open for skiing and riding on weekends through April thanks to the deep season. The mountain is reporting 272 inches year to date, on par with their seasonal average, and 11 inches in the last 72 hours, but has not reported on yesterday's storm at time of publishing.
Mount Bohemia will most likely remain open for weekend skiing and riding for as long as possible. I visited in early-April of 2022 and found great coverage, corn snow, and endless bump runs. Bohemia remained open into May that year.
The Keweenaw's snowfall totals have fluctuated in recent years, but it's nice to see the snowy region return to form.
To put the county's 301.25 inches of snow into perspective, let's compare it against major ski resorts out west. All snowfall totals have been obtained from each resort's website on April 3, 2025:
Heavenly Mountain Resort, California/Nevada: 230"
Telluride, Colorado: 221"
Wolf Creek, Colorado: 216"
Monarch Mountain, Colorado: 213"
Sun Valley Resort, Idaho: 180"
Brian Head Resort, Utah: 162"
Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico: 101"
Congrats to all of our friends in the Keweenaw who have enjoyed an excellent winter for skiing and riding. Here's hoping Mother Nature gives you a few more weekends up at Mount Bohemia!
