Ever thought about buying a cat skiing outfit? Now might be your chance.
Selkirk Snowcat Skiing, a famed cat skiing operation in British Columbia, is for sale.
Established in 1975 by the pioneering skier Allan Drury, Selkirk Snowcat Skiing has evolved into a preeminent cat skiing destination over its nearly 50-year tenure. A pamphlet provided by Colliers, the group responsible for selling the property, calls it “the birthplace of snowcat skiing.”
The sale includes 12,000 acres of snowcat-accessed terrain, a lodge that can accommodate up to 24 guests, and, according to Colliers, a “highly profitable operation with a 90% return book rate.” Per Selkirk Snowcat Skiing’s website, all of the dates available at the outfit for the 2024 and 2025 ski season are already sold out.
The cat skiing terrain is located in the Southeast portion of British Columbia around the Meadow Mountain area. Its footprint is almost double that of Whistler Blackcomb—the sprawling destination ski resort—and includes varied, multi-aspect terrain that covers everything from gentle glades to alpine bowls. Roughly 32 feet of snow blanket this region each winter. Selkirk Snowcat Skiing’s cat fleet accesses the ski runs through a network of roads that reach, at their highest point, 8,400 feet.
Over the past nine ski seasons, more than $3.5 million has been invested in Selkirk Snowcat Skiing. This includes a complete overhaul of the lodge, the purchase of three Low-Hour PistenBully 400s, eight new snowmobiles, and four new company trucks.
The 19-guest-room lodge rivals other ski accommodations throughout North America and features a games lounge, a hot tub, and a wood-fired sauna.
Drury first began pursuing the idea of a backcountry cat skiing operation in the 1970s. He and his wife, Brenda, during their search for the perfect cat skiing grounds, discovered Meadow Mountain area which, to their benefit, was already criss-crossed by a network of logging and mining roads.
Due to Drury’s vision, the property represents a piece of backcountry skiing history. And his accolades extend to the cats themselves. Drury helped Bombardier design enclosed snow cats designed for passenger transportation. Before this innovation, skiers sat on benches outside the snowcats, using umbrellas to shield themselves from the elements. Drury passed away in 2008.
We’ve contacted Colliers to ask about Selkirk Snowcat Skiing’s price and will update this article if they reply.
