Things will look a little different this coming season at Hunter Mountain, New York.
In preparation for the winter's arrival, the resort updated its trail map, replacing a previous network of trees, trails, and parking lots painted by James Niehues.
Here’s a peek at the newly reimagined digs, and a look back at the retired map.
The latest Hunter Mountain trail map iteration was created by Gary Milliken of VistaMap.
Milliken has worked with several ski areas, including Vail, Arapahoe Basin, and Killington. VistaMap operates outside the ski resort industry, too, creating renditions of zoos, amusement parks, and other venues. But, for a 2017 article, Milliken told the National Ski Areas Association Journal that ski maps are his primary focus. In the modern milieu of notable ski resort mapmakers, Milliken is joined by Niehues’ protege, Rad Smith.
Center stage at Milliken’s Hunter Mountain creation is two new lifts, the Broadway Express and the Otis Quad.
The Broadway Express is a high-speed, six-person replacement for the fixed-grip Broadway Lift. It increases uphill capacity by 55%, and according to Hunter Mountain’s website, is “designed to reduce wait times at one of the mountain’s most popular lifts.” The Otis Quad replaces the two-person fixed-grip E Lift with a four-person fixed-grip lift.
These new lifts are visible on the looker’s left side of Hunter Mountain’s new map. They are part of the Epic Pass resort investment initiative known as “Epic Lift Upgrades.” Other Epic Lift Upgrades debuting this coming season include the Jersey Cream Express at Whistler Blackcomb and a high-speed six-seater at Perisher.
And ahead of the winter of 2025 and 2026, Park City, Utah, plans to replace the two-seater Sunrise chairlift—which transports skiers from the Canyons Village to the Red Pine area—with a ten-person-per-cabin gondola.
Also new this coming season at Hunter Mountain is an automated snowmaking system on three trails: Belt Parkway, Clair’s Way, and Way Out. By implementing the automated snowmaking system, Hunter Mountain aims to provide more early-season terrain and thin skier traffic.
Hunter Mountain has yet to announce an opening date and will open as soon as possible. Last winter, the resort kicked the season off on Saturday, November 25th.
