After two separate accidents at a ski race in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, two skiers have been left injured and another dead, according to Swiss news reports.

The incidents occurred during the Allalin Races, an event series that dates back to 1946 and is aimed at amateur and professional skiers alike. This year’s iteration was held on Friday and Saturday; the competition included several team and individual races. The course starts at around 3,500 meters and finishes near the village of Saas-Fee.

On Saturday, just after 11:15 a.m. two racers collided with one another for unknown reasons, Blue News reports. One skier, aged 18, died at the scene of the crash, while the other was seriously injured and airlifted by Air Zermatt to a hospital in Sion.

The other incident occurred around 9:40 a.m. when a race participant fell and slid off the course. He was also seriously injured and airlifted from the scene.

The prosecutor’s office has opened investigations into both crashes, SRF reports.

Over the weekend, the social media page dedicated to the Allalin Races shared that the races on Saturday had been cancelled “due to a tragic incident.”

“Our thoughts are with family and friends,” the statement reads.
