While March inches towards the end of ski season, there's still plenty of goods to be had. Especially toward the end of the month, March can be a bit of a gamble on conditions. You might get the most perfect corn or slushy spring skiing, you might get an amazing pow day, or you might get something in between.
Planning a ski trip in advance means you can never really count too much on conditions, but for the best shot at skiing good snow in March, resorts that hold snow well with more daylight and warmer temps are a good idea. Some of the factors to consider when choosing are the amount of north-facing terrain, the resort's elevation, and the snowiest months annually.
If it's a spring break trip you're planning, plenty of resorts have fun events through March and April as well, so it's worth looking into these to elevate your trip on and off the slopes.
Here are a few resorts that generally have good snow or good spring skiing in March and events throughout the month as well.
While the 'Ghee doesn't have as much north-facing terrain as other ideal March ski spots, it does have 60% west-facing terrain and no east-facing terrain, which tends to get an increasing rate of sun in the spring. That means that Targhee's slopes hold onto snow well and don't get quite as sun affected as places with lots of east-facing slopes in the spring.
Targhee also gets later season storms fairly often, so a few deep pow days in March isn't at all out of the realm of possibilities. If conditions are a bit more springy, Targhee's Trap Bar has live music throughout the ski season and a great sun deck to work on your goggle tan and après.
Another high-elevation Colorado resort, Arapahoe Basin, or A-Basin, tends to offer great skiing in March and through the late season. Although A-Basin gets a relatively average annual snowfall for Colorado, its snow profile has a pretty steep rise given its ability to hang onto snow.
A base elevation of 10,780 feet and 55% north-facing terrain means that even late spring can still offer great conditions. A Basin also has kind of a legendary parking lot après scene, so if you get a warmer, sunny day, you can look forward to enjoying a lot of beers with locals.
Winter Park has a high elevation and a lot of north-facing terrain, which means it hangs onto snow pretty well and gets more snow annually than a lot of other Colorado resorts.
Anecdotally, I skied Winter Park growing up in Colorado. My parents used to let me skip school and go skiing on my birthday every year, which is March 19th, and I have lots of memories of skiing deep, blower powder at Winter Park and Mary Jane on my birthday. It is safe to say that evidence shows Winter Park is a great place to ski in March, especially if your birthday is in March!
Wolf Creek gets the most snow of any resort in Colorado and historically, March is Colorado's snowiest month. With 65% north-facing terrain and a base elevation of 10,300 feet, Wolf Creek also does everything it can to hang onto snow. Even warmer spring storms tend to stay much colder at Wolf Creek, making it an excellent destination for March skiing.
Wolf Creek also hosts lots of events throughout the spring if you're hoping for more than just your average ski trip. Things like College Days, Local Appreciation Days, and Easter celebrations can all be fun additions to a March Wolf Creek trip.
Alta tops the list of 'best places to ski' just about every month of the year, so it's no shocker that March at Alta is likely to be incredible, too. Alta's snow quality is pretty unmatched any any point through the season, even as temperatures can start to rise.
Even as the sun is out longer in March, more than half of Alta's terrain is north facing, which means it's less affected by longer daylight hours and sees less melt-freeze cycles. In 2024, March was Alta's snowiest single month on record in 43 years. Even if you're hoping for spring skiing, you might be blessed with a deep powder day or two while skiing Alta in March.
