Alan Shearer has compared certain elements of Newcastle United’s fanbase to Celtic’s following their Carabao Cup victory…

Eddie Howe’s side secured an iconic 2-1 win over Liverpool in the final at Wembley a little over a week ago, with goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak making the difference.

Thrilling scenes unfolded on Teesside

On Saturday, Newcastle celebrated their Carabao Cup triumph with an open-top bus parade. Thrilling scenes unfolded on Teesside as thousands of fans came together.

While discussing the trophy-win and the celebrations that followed on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer name-checked the Celtic supporters: “We [Newcastle] just love our football, and we’ve been starved of success for so many years,” he said.

‘We love our football. It’s a life. It is really, honestly’

“I think it was just a relief that we eventually got over the line. And yeah, we love our football. It’s a life. It is really, honestly. I don’t think I’ve been anywhere in the country where you have nanas and grandas, mums and dads, young kids and everyone who wears the black and white shirt like the Newcastle people do.”

“And I think maybe in Liverpool or maybe in Glasgow for theRangers and Celtic, I don’t know, but it is very, very different and unique in Newcastle.”

Newcastle ended a 70-year trophy drought with their Wembley triumph the weekend before last.

It is well-documented that Newcastle’s boss Howe was strongly considered for the vacant Celtic role in the summer of 2021, but the Hoops hierarchy ultimately appointed Ange Postecoglou instead after the Englishman knocked it back.
