Tottenham Hotspur took a mighty step towards securing Champions League football for next season under Ange Postecoglou. The Lilywhites, against all odds, managed to beat Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday. It was a perfect performance by Ange’s men and the club reached its first European semi-final in six years.
Spurs went into the game as the underdogs. The North London club had suffered an embarrassing defeat just last weekend against Wolves in the Premier League. More than the result, it was the performance that left the fans frustrated and worried about their chances in Germany. But Ange’s side managed to rise to the occasion and beat Frankfurt comfortably.
It is fair to say that the win on Thursday night might just be the turning point for Ange Postecoglou at N17. The Australian has faced a lot of scrutiny recently from the fans and the media, and this was a perfect way to prove that he still deserved to be at the helm at Tottenham. With the club suffering in the Premier League, the Europa League acts as a saving grace for this season and winning the competition might save Big Ange’s job at the club.
Tottenham have struggled to get going, both on and off the pitch. The Lilywhites are staring down the barrel in the Premier League and a major squad overhaul is needed in the summer. The only positive that the Spurs fans can take from this season has been the recruitment. Daniel Levy has focused on bringing young talent in, and it has certainly worked out well.
Ange Postecoglou has now insisted that the club will not change their transfer plans in the summer, irrespective of how the season ends from here on. While speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Spurs manager said (as transcribed by Football.london),
“We’ve had a clear plan from when we started on how we’re going to play, what kind of squad we’re going to have, how we’re going to build that squad. I don’t think it’s any secret, we’ve gone for a certain age profile, knowing it’s something we’re going to build on and that should continue.”
The ex-Celtic boss suggested that the transfer plans of bringing in young players with high ceilings will not change. Big Ange believes that the club have built a good foundation for the future and they should continue doing just that in the summer. The possibility of playing Champions League football next season remains, but the Spurs manager believes that the club should stick to the plan and build the team around youngsters.
Now, the Lilywhites face a crucial Europa League semi-final tie against Bodo/Glimt. The Norwegian side overcame all the odds and managed to reach the last four of the competition. It will certainly not be an easy tie, but Ange Postecoglou will still head into the game as the favourites to reach the final.
The only way that the Australian manager can save his job at N17 is by winning the Europa League and ending the 17-year-long trophy drought. It seems like an uphill task, but there is a possibility that Ange Postecoglou just about manages to do that. All eyes will be on his side during this last part of the campaign.
