Sassuolo star Domenico Berardi says the Neroverdi are ‘like a family’ and insists he’ll ‘never say no’ to an Italy call-up.

The Italian winger returned to action after an Achilles tendon injury this season, contributing to Sassuolo’s Serie A promotion after just one season in Serie B.

“I’ve spent many years here, and to me it’s like a family. They’ve treated me like a son. I was only a kid 12 years ago, now I’ve grown up and become a man. I’ve made errors in the past, but now I’ve matured, and I owe a lot to this club,” Berardi told Sky Sport Italia.

“I’ve had some difficult months, but I’ve come back even stronger. I’ve worked hard to bring Sassuolo back to where they deserve to be.”

Former Italy defender Fabio Grosso was appointed as Sassuolo’s coach last summer and immediately achieved Serie A promotion.

“Everyone has been at ease with him,” said Berardi.

“He’s been great in the group management. He’s made everyone feel important. The group makes the difference, and we’ve proved it this season.”

Berardi is a 2020 Italy Euro winner, but hasn’t played an international match since November 2023.

“I’ve always had the Azzurri inside me; it will always be a part of me,” he concluded.

“I’ve faced challenging moments, but now I’ve recovered, and I will never say no to the Azzurri shirt.”
