The NBA 2024-25 season ended for the Dallas Mavericks, but head coach Jason Kidd hasn't stopped working. The retired point guard has expanded his interests beyond basketball, having close ties with soccer teams.
Following a disappointing season that saw the Mavericks shockingly trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers and lose Kyrie Irving to an ACL injury, Kidd shifted his focus to different matters.
Five months after reports suggested Kidd teamed up with a consortium that intended to buy a stake in Premier League club Crystal Palace, the coach decided to give it a try and become a team owner in England's top flight.
The Premier League has several teams with a rich history, especially the so-called big six, which is composed of Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur.
Kidd, however, has reportedly joined the Texas-based ownership group of Everton, the fourth-winningest team in English top division history, Everton (nine first-division titles).
NBA insider Marc Stein shared on Thursday that this will be Kidd's third ownership in soccer after he joined the USL Championship's Oakland Roots and the Oakland Soul's boards.
The club announced Kidd's arrival on social media, too, while the coach shared his first message as a board member.
“I’m honoured to be joining Everton’s ownership at such an important moment: with a new stadium on the horizon and a bright future ahead, it’s a great moment to come on board,” Kidd said in a release.
Everton have a rich history in English soccer, but their current moment isn't the best. They rank 13th in the Premier League standings with 38 points, far away from European competitions (Chelsea sit sixth with 57 points) after a tumultuous season that included the firing of Sean Dyche due to poor results.
