Tottenham Hotspur are anticipating a busy offseason amid an extremely underwhelming Premier League campaign, with Ange Postecoglou’s future now a major talking point.
The Australian tactician is likely to depart N17 even if the Lilywhites win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League, with potential successors already being lined up by chairman Daniel Levy. The club are also weighing up a move for a centre-back this summer amid the uncertain future of Cristian Romero.
Earlier this week, Cristian Romero left the door wide open for a transfer after admitting his desire to play in Spain. By doing so, the centre-back made it absolutely clear that he is not 100 per cent focused on Spurs.
The Argentina international, whose contract at Tottenham expires in June 2027, has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid since March. The 26-year-old is in his third season in English football, having arrived at Tottenham on an initial loan deal from Atalanta in 2021. And now, Romero feels the time is right for him to take the next big step in his career.
According to reliable Argentinean outlet TyC Sports, Atletico Madrid have a ‘serious chance’ to take Romero away from Spurs. He is unhappy with the North London club’s management, and Atletico can offer him an escape route.
The La Liga side have made the South American star their No.1 defensive target this summer, with Diego Simeone already holding private talks with him. There is a strong chance Tottenham will be without European football next season, unless they win the Europa League, which is something Simeone’s club are planning to take advantage of.
Despite making the Tottenham man his primary target to bolster the defensive unit, the aforementioned report adds Simeone hasn’t yet managed to convince Atletico’s hierarchy to invest in this operation. Levy is understood to value Romero in the region of €75m, but he could lower that price if the defender forces a move away from N17.
Romero has struggled for consistency during his four years in North London. Injuries have limited the 2022 World Cup winner to only 23 appearances in all competitions this season, and with him on course to enter the final two years of his deal, Levy would be wise to cash him in and reinvest the funds into a reliable and quality replacement.
The Cordoba-born talent’s race at Spurs seems to have been run, and for someone whose mind and heart aren’t here, it is better to part ways at the right moment.
