Throughout last summer, Liverpool looked set to sign Martín Zubimendi until the player decided to stay at Real Socieded.
The Reds are linked with him again, with the Spaniard looking ever more likely to move soon, though they are no longer the leaders in the race for his signature.
And so, they have begun looking elsewhere.
As reported by TeamTalk, Liverpool are considering making a move for Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller.
The 23-year-old Germany international is being eyed up as an alternative to the Reds’ long-term target Martín Zubimendi, who after deciding to remain at Real Sociedad last summer is reportedly regretting his decision and expected to be on the move.
However, Liverpool are no longer leading the race for Zubimendi, with Arsenal and Man City being considered the likelier destinations for the Spain international.
So Liverpool are looking at other options, and a fee in the region of €40 million could land him Stiller, who has become a mainstay in the Stuttgart starting XI, having arrived at the club at the start of last season from Hoffenheim, and has been a linchpin for them this season as they try to once again grab a Champions League spot for next season.
A move for Stiller is not expected to be completed in January, with Liverpool eyeing an early summer move.
This is quintessential Liverpool, and they need to be praised for it. Having realised a move for Zubimendi may not happen, given their track record one expected Liverpool to move on to other players.
Stiller is not only a player who’d improve Liverpool, he is also a symbol of the club’s squad-building process that has made them so good in getting in players on time as well as moving on the ones they no longer need on time.
We are likely to see few more deep-lying midfielders linked with Liverpool over the next months before they make a final call.
