Southampton, Leicester, Ipswich Among EPL's Worst Ever

The 2024-25 Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the bleakest ever for Southampton, Leicester City, and Ipswich Town.

Returning to the top flight this season, all three clubs struggled mightily. With Southampton and Leicester already relegated and Ipswich on the brink, this trio is on pace to be the worst-performing relegated group in Premier League history.

The three soccer clubs have combined for just 50 points from 99 matches. Last year’s record-low 66 by Burnley, Luton, and Sheffield United shows a grim picture between the clubs.

  • Southampton: 11 points
  • Leicester: 18 points
  • Ipswich: 21 points

Managing just 10 wins between them, the trio has conceded a staggering 222 goals combined.

Record-Breaking Struggles

Southampton were the earliest ever team relegated in a 38-match season, falling on Matchday 31. Leicester set an unwanted record with nine straight goalless home games. Ipswich, 15 points from safety with five matches left, are virtually certain to go down too.

Compared to past seasons, the drop is drastic.

In 2022-23, relegated teams averaged 30 points each. This year? Just 16.7 so far. Despite heavy spending – over £100 million each by Ipswich and Southampton – poor recruitment, defensive weaknesses, and managerial instability haven’t made much of a difference.

If Ipswich joins the others, it’ll mark the second straight season all three promoted teams have gone straight back down, a feat not seen since 1997-98.

The 2024-25 campaign may become a cautionary tale of how not to handle the jump to England’s top flight.
