I once interviewed (well, DM’d) Kelly Slater a message with the following: “Would you rather surf with crocodiles or sharks?” It was for an article. And to my surprise, both with regards to the GOAT responding to my humble question and his answer, he replied with something along the lines of:
“Sharks. 100 percent. Crocs are far more dangerous.”
Per a quick Google search, it’s true. Crocodiles, by the numbers, kill far more people each year than sharks. Crocs? On average, responsible for 1,000 deaths per year. Sharks? Five or six.
So, when a video showing crocodiles infiltrating the world’s premier surfing zone – the Mentawai Islands – via legendary boatman, Martin Daly, concerns were raised. See the clip below:
“Rumors of crocs at one of my most favorite waves that I’ve been surfing for over 40 years are rumors no longer,” Daly captioned the clip. “Big fella has been there for quite a while, saw another only slightly smaller one last year at a nearby break. First we’ve seen here, surfing with apex predators is not optimal, they have left us alone up until now but…”
A handful of others chimed in, citing that they, too, have also seen crocs in the Ments recently:
“I saw a small one at Maccas back in July… terrifying experience between the wave and the boat. I’ve never paddled faster in my life.”
Saltwater crocodiles were once fairly prominent in Indonesia, but the numbers were killed off by the mid 20th century. Now, according to reports, the crocs are starting to return. Per a croc expert:
“The spike in sightings and attacks suggests we’re going to have to find ways of living alongside these reptiles. The coastal waters and estuaries of Lombok and western Java are now likely home to a small resident population.
“What can be done to prevent attacks? First, people have to know that crocs are back. Increasing crocodile awareness and caution is vital to save lives.”
Stay safe when visiting surfing’s Disneyland.
