Top five U.S. swimmers to watch at Paris Olympics

The U.S. Olympic swimming trials concluded Sunday night in Indianapolis and now the American roster is locked in.

The team has a solid mix of Olympic veterans and fresh newcomers. Here are the top five U.S. swimmers you should watch in Paris.

1. Katie Ledecky

Heading to her fourth Olympic games, the 10-time medalist will be looking to defend her gold medals in four freestyle events (200, 400, 800 and 1500 meters). She'll have her hands full with Australian Ariarne Titmus - who broke Ledecky's 200 and 400 meter freestyle world records earlier in the season and defeated her in the 400 meter event in Tokyo - gunning to re-topple her as the world's best female freestyler.

2. Caeleb Dressel

After taking a nine-month mental health break from the sport after the Tokyo Games held in 2021, Dressel will look to defend his gold medals in the 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter butterfly events. He'll be joined in the latter race by 17-year-old Thomas Heilman who snuck in from an outside lane in the dramatic final at trials.

Dressel will also participate in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay which will attempt to fend off hot challenges from rivals Australia and France.

3. Kate Douglass

Taking part in to her second Olympics, Douglass will be looking to improve upon her 2021 bronze medal in the 200 meter individual medley. She will also push the competition in the 200 meter breaststroke as well as the 100 meter freestyle events.

Douglass is also coming fresh off an NCAA national championship with the University of Virginia women's swim team in March.

Her Cavaliers teammate and young phenom Gretchen Walsh will be joining her in Paris, making her Olympic debut in the 50 meter and the 4x100 meter freestyle relay plus the 100 meter butterfly where she broke the world record in a semi-final heat at trials.

4. Regan Smith

A product of Michael Phelps' coach Bob Bowman at Arizona State and Texas, Smith will participate in the 200 meter backstroke and try to improve on her 2021 silver medal in the 200 meter butterfly.

She'll also try to claim gold in her the 100 meter backstroke, where she earned bronze in Tokyo, having just broke the world record during the U.S. trials.

5. Ryan Murphy

Murphy will be participating in his third Olympic Games after winning two golds in 2016 and then silver and bronze medals in 2021 respectively for the 100 and 200 meter backstroke events.

He will be racing in both events again in Paris after the so-called "Backstroke King" made U.S. Olympic trials history in Indianapolis by becoming the first swimmer to win both backstroke events at three consecutive trials.

Team USA is stacked with swimming talent and will again be a force to be reckoned with in Paris. The 2024 Games will open July 26 with swimming events beginning July 27.
