The American hardcourt swing is in full force as players from the ATP and WTA head to California to start the Sunshine Double. The tour begins with the 2024 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells before shifting to Miami. This has been dubbed the Fifth Grand Slam of the tennis calendar. Many of the big names from the ATP and WTA are in Palm Springs, California.
The semifinals of the 2024 BNP Paribas Open are here. Carlos Alcaraz, the defending from a year ago, will take on Jannik Sinner, the 2024 Australian Open Champion. It is a rematch of a year ago when these two men put on an epic semifinal match. The other semifinal match will be Daniil Medvedev, the runner-up a year ago, taking on American Tommy Paul.
On the women’s side, world number one Iga Swiatek cruised into the tournament’s final, defeating Marta Kostyuk 61 62. The other semifinal was much more competitive. Maria Sakkari defeated Coco Gauff in three tough sets, 64 67 62. It will be an exciting match-up between Swiatek and Sakkari at the end of this event.
Tennis: 2024 BNP Paribas Open: Indian Wells Underway, Novak Djokovic Upset
Sinner and Alcaraz have played against each other five times in their young careers. They always put on epic matches. Expect this match to go at least three sets. Sinner leads their head to head 3-2 and has not forgotten what happened at this event a year ago. Not to mention, Sinner is playing more consistent tennis than Alcaraz. Though you wouldn’t know with the way Carlitos played against Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. That was as routine as routine could get. Sinner is playing with loads of confidence after winning in Australia, and it started before that when he played Novak Djokovic three times in two weeks.
This is the featured match of the day on Stadium Court 1 at Indian Wells.
This should be a route for Medvedev as he looks to add this title to the list of hardcourt accomplishments. However, it will not be easy against Tommy Paul. Paul has shown his ability to serve and volley in this tournament. Not to mention, Paul likes to play on the net more than most. He is a throwback to the old style of tennis. He watches many older matches to get pointers on how to work at the net. So that could give the Bay Boy of Men’s tennis, Mr. Hardcourt Specialist Daniil Medvedev, fits. However, Medvedev is starting to change his return position on the back of the court. He is not standing as far back but mixing it up. We know that serving and forehanding are significant, but a guy like Paul can take advantage of his return position. It should be a good one.
Semifinal action gets underway this afternoon at the 2024 BNP Paribas Open.
