It is semifinal ATP Saturday once again, and it is time to decide who makes the final of a prestigious 500-level tournament. With two Masters 1000 events coming up over the next three weeks, it is go time in the clay court season. All four of the semifinalists are in the top 30, and three of them are in the top 13 in the world.

For a 500-level event, this was a stacked field, and it delivered on many levels as we are down to four amazing players. With the clay season about to hit a different level, these four players want to win an important 500-event, being that it points to things getting closer to Roland Garros.

Holger Rune(-205) vs. Karen Khachanov(+166)–> Prediction: Rune

This is actually the match that is much easier to pick out of the two ATP, as the young Rune has played some great tennis over the last two months. It has been nice to see Khachanov return to his top 15 form over the last month, but from a weapons point of view, all of the best ones are from Rune’s racket.

Rune has been in top form, which makes him a near top-five level ATP player. This feels like a huge upset if the Russian makes it to the final in Barcelona. Rune has been waiting to have his name in the same conversation as Sinner and Alcaraz. If he can have a memorable season on the dirt, he can start to gain traction from people’s opinions and the rankings themselves. That makes this result even more crucial.

Arthur Fils(+270) vs. Carlos Alcaraz(-370)–> Prediction: Fils

This is me going out on a limb, but I like the young Frenchman to pull off the upset over the heavy favorite for the ATP. They played in the quarterfinals in Monte-Carlo, and Fils had the best chance out of anyone in the tournament to dethrone Alcaraz. Fils had had an easy tournament this week, which included a 15-minute win on Friday after his opponent retired, and that comes after being off on Thursday.

So really, the 20-year-old has had two days while Alacaraz has basically played every day for two weeks now. In any other circumstance,  I would pick the Spaniard, but this feels like a big moment for Fils, while it would allow Alcaraz to regroup before these two Masters 1000 events kick off next week.

Fils has been waiting for a moment like this for months now, and this feels like his first big moment since turning pro.

Conclusion on the ATP

This feels like a major opportunity for these ATP players to have some real momentum heading into the three most important clay-court events. These players aren’t just gonna go deep here in Barcelona, but all four see themselves as threats to either go deep or even win the second major of the year. Men’s ATP tennis has been wide open this year, and even with a player like Alcaraz in the mix once again, that doesn’t mean there is a surefire clear winner in every tournament. It is clear why tennis has become as popular as it has ever been.
