The 2025 Barcelona Open got underway on Monday. It is always one of the season’s most eagerly anticipated ATP 500 tournaments, and four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz is the biggest draw at this year’s iteration. Three ATP stars withdrew after the draw was made and were replaced by lucky losers. This article reports on those players and who replaced them.
Lorenzo Musetti was the first player to withdraw late from the Barcelona Open. The Italian had an outstanding run to the final of last week’s Monte Carlo Masters. He was one set away from the title, but struggled with a thigh injury later in the contest. Musetti may not have played in Barcelona anyway after battling through several matches in Monte Carlo. However, his injury made the decision easier.
Tomas Machac was the second player to withdraw late from the Barcelona Open. He lost in the round of 32 at the Monte Carlo Masters to Alex de Minaur. Machac did not seem to have an injury in that match, although he did elect not to play his doubles contest the day afterward. No official reason has been given for his absence from the Spanish tournament.
Jordan Thompson was the latest withdrawal from the Barcelona Open. The Australian’s decision was announced after play began on Monday. He missed two months with an injury after the Australian Open before returning at last month’s BNP Paribas Open. It is unknown whether that injury has recurred or if there is a separate problem.
Arthur Rinderknech benefited from Musetti’s withdrawal from the Barcelona Open. The 29-year-old lost in the final round of qualifying to Jesper de Jong before being given a reprieve. At his best, he is adept at clay and could cause problems for other players, although world No. 75 also suffers from inconsistency. Arthur Rinderknech will start his campaign at the ATP 500 tournament against Laslo Djere.
Damir Dzumur replaced Tomas Machac. The Bosnian, who fell to Cameron Norrie in the final round of qualifying, reached the third round of the 2015 and 2018 French Open, and most of his Challenger Tour finals were on clay. Jacob Fearnley, who Daniel Elahi Galan defeated in qualifying, took Thompson’s place.
