Hollywood Animal is a business simulator that puts you in charge of a movie studio during the 1920s. The game’s tagline is “Make movies, even if someone has to die,” which is sure to intrigue gamers. The Early Access version is currently available on Steam for $19.99.

The game’s Steam page advertises that you’ll be able to lead your studio “through decades of creative achievements and glamor, debauchery and dark deeds, tough choices and unpleasant compromises.” In addition, the page claims that you can take your studio in any creative direction you want, even if it goes against current trends. It also states that the game goes beyond just building a studio and managing it. The true meat of the game is “the choices you make and the human stories that are written in the process.”

The Dark Side of Hollywood

One of the trailers calls this game “a box of spiders designed as a tycoon game.” The other studios are aggressive, active participants in the competition for viewers and publicity, and they will actively try to sabotage your studio. In order to stay on top of your rivals, you can apparently do things like enlist help from the mafia or throw a tourist in the water to stage a rescue committed by one of your stars. The trailer states that “real power isn’t when you can do good for yourself. Real power is when you can do bad to the other guy.”

Reception So Far

The game currently has a “Mostly Positive” user rating on Steam. An issue many reviewers are pointing out is that the game takes a long time to research upgrades. In addition, they claim that the game is difficult and it’s easy to go bankrupt. They also state that the game has plenty of bugs in its current state, but that is to be expected for a game that is still in Early Access.

Should You Buy or Should You Wait?

Should you buy Hollywood Animal now, when it still has a relatively cheap price, or should you wait for the full version? It is currently unknown how much the game will cost when it launches, but you might have more fun when it is in its finished state. If you enjoy your simulation games as relaxing ventures where you can concentrate on customizing your business, you might want to look elsewhere. However, if you enjoy embracing your darker side and are up for a challenge, this might be the game for you.
