Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has captivated fans and players alike, delivering a thrilling adventure that is true to the iconic film franchise. The game was released on December 9, 2024, on Windows and Xbox Series X/S, with its subsequent release on April 17, 2025, for PlayStation 5. The game received rave reviews and sold well. Speculations about a sequel are already generating hype among fans eagerly awaiting more world-traveling adventures with Dr. Jones.

A Triumphant Return

MachineGames developed the game, and it was published by Bethesda Softworks. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle drops players into a 1937 adventure between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Players step into the shoes of the world-famous archaeologist as he explores a mystery involving holy sites that are creating a “Great Circle” around the world. The game harmoniously combines action-adventure and stealth, providing a first-person view which shifts to third-person when performing certain actions, like wielding Indy’s signature whip.

Its engaging narrative, interactive gameplay, and realistic Indiana Jones world have been lauded by critics. Eurogamer’s Katharine Castle described it as “the best Indiana Jones adventure since The Last Crusade,” praising its humor, discovery, and problem-solving. Its success at the box office is also a demonstration of this because it became the second best-selling game in America when it came out and boasted more than 4 million players by January 2025.

Teasers of a Sequel

Even though no sequel has received an official green light, the praise in recent statements from industry leaders suggests that another adventure can be expected. Microsoft Gaming’s head Phil Spencer seemed obviously thrilled with the reception of the game. Although he did not explicitly confirm that a sequel would be produced, his praise indicates an openness to continuing future endeavors with the Indiana Jones brand.

Aside from this, MachineGames is also developing a downloadable content (DLC) expansion titled Indiana Jones and the Order of Giants that will be out in 2025. The new content is said to delve deeper into the game’s rich lore and possibly serve as a bridge to any future games.

Uncovering Untold Stories

The Indiana Jones franchise has a treasure trove of untold stories waiting to be explored. Douglas Reilly, general manager and vice president of Lucasfilm Games, highlighted the richness of stories yet to be told, saying, “There’s a lot of space in between the films where we could tell more and more Indiana Jones stories that I think would be super interesting.”

This sensation opens the door wide to the unlimited possibilities for sequels or spin-offs, potentially involving other time periods, settings, and actors in the Indiana Jones universe.

What a Sequel Could Be

If a sequel to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is in the works, one can hope that MachineGames will once more rely on their strengths: rich environmental storytelling, clever puzzles, and brisk action. A hoped-for sequel might explore further mythology or archaeology legends, introducing new allies and darker enemies, perhaps even diving into Indy’s past or introducing legacy characters from the films in a greater role.

One of the things that has been discussed within fan forums is to introduce additional open-world content or branching conversation that could lead to different conclusions, aspects which could push the experience to new levels. It’s also possible to include more of Indiana’s signature props and higher lore connections to the films, especially The Last Crusade and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The Road Ahead

While anticipating official word of a sequel, thrilled fans are already eager for official word of a sequel, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s success testifies to the franchise’s enduring appeal. Its captivating story, captivating gameplay, and faithful homage to the classic movies have set a difficult precedent for any future games.

Whether as a straightforward sequel, additional DLC, or completely different excursions, Indiana Jones’s legacy endures strongly within the gaming community. As accurately noted by Phil Spencer, there is still “life in that franchise,” and gamers can eagerly look forward to further heart-stopping adventures alongside the world’s most popular archaeologist.
