Rebellion CEO Discusses Possible Atomfall Sequels

Atomfall, an open-world survival shooter game developed by the gaming studio Rebellion, was released in March to relative critical acclaim. Despite dropping around the same time as Assassin’s Creed: Shadows and being drowned out a bit by the aforementioned behemoth, Atomfall has still seen quite a bit of success in the gaming community. Despite not releasing a new IP game in six years, the studio seems eager to push the envelope. CEO Jason Kingsley recently spoke about the possibility, but he also provided some caveats to his lofty goals.

Atomfall Sequels May Be On The Horizon

Atomfall is an open-world shooter with a unique spin on the genre. The game is inspired by Fallout: New Vegas, but takes a clever shift from the memorable title. The game is set in the beautiful green Northern English countryside, despite the underlying theme of World War 2-era martial law and nuclear apocalypse. The creative spin was originally met with skepticism, but fans have ultimately reacted positively to the title, although some reviews view it as a lesser, flawed Fallout attempt.

According to Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, a major goal of the studio is to capitalize on the success of their recent game, Atomfall. The gaming studio has considered turning the successful shooter into a series, with possible sequels on the horizon. Before fans get too excited, however, there appear to be some roadblocks that could influence the possibility of a sequel, let alone an entire franchise, from coming to fruition.

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Kingsley spoke about the studio and the company’s CTO, Chris Kingsley. “I don’t think we got it just right. I think that one of the things Chris and I want to do is repeat success. So we want to do more Sniper Elite, we want to do more Zombie Army, we want to do more Strange Brigade. Now it looks like we want to do more Atomfall. Can we find the resources to do it? I don’t know. The idea has always been to have two-thirds sequels, and one-third new IP, pushing the boundaries.”

Financial Feasibility At The Heart Of Atomfall Sequel Consideration

It is unclear how successful Atomfall has been financially, but given that it hit the 2 million players mark, the game evidently had enough success to catch the eye of the CEO. In fact, it is outperforming expectations. “We’ve done a lot better than our mid-range estimates, actually. It’s nice when marketing comes back to you and says, ‘yep, we underestimated our high-level success’.”

That said, there are clearly barriers to the dream of turning Atomfall into a running series. The game has succeeded in large part, according to Kingsley, due to the presence of the game on Xbox Game Pass. By both drawing in new fans and earning pay just for being on the service, Rebellion has done enough to feel comfortable with Atomfall. Even still, budget is a massive consideration when approaching the development of any game, and Kingley is not sure the company has the resources to complete a sequel.

“We don’t deliberately fit into this mid-range, but that’s what we can do, and what we can do successfully. We literally can’t afford to spend 200 million on making a game. We just don’t have 200 million.” In the end, it seems a sequel entirely depends on whether the budget is reasonable enough to pull off. Therefore, fans should stay tuned, as the company looks to determine the feasibility of the risky goal.

Final Thoughts

It appears that Rebellion has the goal of releasing an Atomfall sequel. Given the fact that the game is overperforming expectations, it makes sense. While budget is an obvious roadblock, it seems likely that Rebellion will find a way to make it work out. The entry could be a ways away, though, so fans of the game should not get their hopes up that a new entry will be coming up in the near future. Hopefully, the studio will give us more information once a plan is finalized.
