From defending all five positions on opposing teams to either starting or coming off the bench and seeing her role change, Phoenix Mercury guard/forward Sophie Cunningham has been reliable whenever she is called upon and was rewarded because of what she has brought to the organization since being drafted in 2019.

On Saturday morning, the fan-favorite Cunningham signed a one-year contract extension that will run through 2025.  The full terms of this deal were not disclosed at the time of reporting.

Cunningham, who has played in all 37 games (18 starts) during Phoenix’s injury-plagued 2024 season, is averaging 8.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.

Since joining the Mercury out of college from the University of Missouri, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft has amassed 7.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game across 179 career games (89 starts). Known for her offensive capabilities, she has shot at a 42.1% clip from the field and 35.9% from three in her career.

“Phoenix has become my home away from home, and I am so thrilled to be in the Valley and continue to get to play in front of the best fans in the W – the X-Factor,” Cunningham said in a press release. “The investments Mat [Ishbia] is making in our organization are unmatched and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of what we are building here, on the court and in the community.”

This season, Cunningham moved up to ninth all-time in Mercury franchise history in scoring with 1,372 points. She is 175 away from former Mercury and current Seattle Storm guard Skylar Diggins-Smith for No. 8 on the leaderboard (1,547).

The Mercury has an extremely busy offseason on their hands and this is just one of many moves that will be made over the coming months. Only Cunningham, Natasha Cloud, Rebecca Allen and Kahleah Copper are signed for 2025 while the rest of the team – including Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner – will become free agents after this season concludes.
