New AEW Trios Champions have been crowned.
The Opps team consisting of Samoa Joe, Katsuyori Shibata, and Powerhouse Hobbs — substituting for Hook, defeated The Death Riders team of Jon Moxley — substituting for PAC, Claudio Castagnoli, and Wheeler Yuta in the main event of Wednesday’s Dynamite Spring BreakThru special in Boston, becoming the new World Trios Champions.
The originally advertised Joe, Shibata, and Hook vs. Moxley, Castagnoli, and Yuta matchup was changed following an angle on Wednesday’s Dynamite. It was announced at the top of Wednesday’s telecast that The Death Riders had attacked Hook prior to the show, and that he was out of the match.
Taz, Hook’s father, was not in his customary position at the commentary desk for the show, with announcers Excalibur and Tony Schiavone explaining that Taz had accompanied Hook to the hospital after the attack from The Death Riders.
Hook was seen vomiting in the ring during his match on last week’s Dynamite, but it has not been made clear whether or not tonight’s angle was to cover for a legitimate illness or injury suffered last week.
In Wednesday’s title match, Joe choked out Moxley with the Coquina Clutch for the finish. The bout featured run-ins from Willow Nightingale and Swerve Strickland on behalf of The Opps, while The Young Bucks got involved in the bout on behalf of The Death Riders as those two groups continue to tease an uneasy alliance.
After the victory from The Opps, the babyface locker room emptied to celebrate The Death Riders’ defeat:
