We are now one week away from the biggest wrestling show of the year: WrestleMania 41. WWE Smackdown is on its second last stop before the show and some matches are still being announced. A match taking place tonight will also create a Women's Tag Team Title Match at the Showcase Of The Immortals. Let's see what's in store for tonight's episode.
Last week on Smackdown, the WWE Champion Cody Rhodes was absent but he will make up for lost time as he returns to the show tonight. What he will say exactly is on everybody's mind, but he will likely just set up hype for the final confrontation he has with his WrestleMania 41 opponent John Cena.
Cena is set to appear on next week's Smackdown in what will be the final confrontation between himself and Rhodes before WrestleMania Sunday's main event.
Although the two men were World Heavyweight Champions in 2024, this year at WrestleMania Drew McIntyre and Damian Priest will have their first-ever singles match together with no titles on the line. McIntyre hs placed the blame for all of his failures in the past year on Priest and Priest has responded by saying that McIntyre needs to look in the mirror for why he's failed.
In their last clash, Damian Priest smashed McIntyre into a car which caused glass to shred McIntyre's eye.
In the promo tonight, expect the two to get heated again as McIntyre and Priest have both dug deep into their personal histories for this feud. Of course, it's going to end in a big melee given how temperamental these two men are.
Last week on Smackdown, Rey Fenix made his debut by winning against NXT Tag Team Champion Nathan Frazier. While it was a completely flawless performance, Fenix did impress fans and the leader of Legado Del Fantasma, Santos Escobar. Escobar has been pleading with his underlings, Berto and Angel to impress him with a win for weeks and Berto stepped up by offering to challenge the newly signed luchadore.
It makes all the sense in the world for Berto to keep disappointing Escobar and for Fenix to win once again. At some point, Escobar will face Fenix himself and a loss to his underling Berto fits the story.
With Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez not having any clear challengers for their WWE Women's Tag Team Championships at the moment, WWE has gone to a tried and true staple: the Gauntlet Match. These types of matches have a knack for producing some shocking winners and I predict tonight will be no different.
Despite being seen together in the background for a few weeks now, Natalya and Maxxine Dupri have yet to wrestle a match together. What better way to start off their tag team journey than with a shock upset in a gauntlet match? Katana Chance and Kayden Carter haven't caught on with fans, Bayley and Lyra Valkyria will likely implode because of their brewing rivalry and B-Fab & Michin will likely fall to the Secret Hervice team. That leaves one babyface team to face the heel champions at WrestleMania 41: Natalya and Maxxine Dupri.
Every WWE show moved networks in the past year. NXT was a big success for the USA Network on Tuesday nights, but they made the switch to the CW, which brought a new look to the developmental show.
In 2019, SmackDown made its own big move, going from cable to network TV on FOX. This led to a huge increase in ratings, thanks in part as well to The Bloodline story, but with FOX not getting the ad revenue they hoped for, they let the Friday night show go. On September 13 2024, it went back to the USA Network.
