The Pittsburgh Steelers had everything going well for them at one point during the 2024 season. The team had a record of 10-3 with a chance to win the AFC North and maybe even claim the one seed in the AFC. However, the most important aspect of the impressive season was that the team was getting pretty impressive quarterback play from Russell Wilson. Wilson is near the end of his career, but he could have been the signal-caller for the next couple of seasons for the Steelers had his play not fallen off to end the season. Saying the end of the 2024 season in Pittsburgh was a disaster is an understatement. The team lost its final four regular season games before getting embarrassed once again in the postseason. Wilson did not play well over that stretch, which is partially why the organization put most of its efforts into re-signing Justin Fields over Wilson. The veteran was limited over that final stretch of games as he had some bad turnovers and consistently hung onto the ball for too long. Team insider Mike DeFabo recently appeared on The Bettor Angle, and he discussed the Steelers' true intentions with Wilson heading into the 2025 offseason. "Publicly, they framed this as a Justin versus Russ decision, but it's pretty clear that they were really just using Russell Wilson as a backup plan and as leverage." DeFabo said. The Steelers came out after the 2024 season ended and announced that the organization would like to have either Wilson or Fields return as the starter for the 2025 season. The team preferred Fields, but failed to re-sign the quarterback before he hit the open market and signed with the New York Jets. The organization only stated they were still interested in Wilson to try and get Fields to ink a new deal. Wilson has been nothing more than a backup option in Pittsburgh, and that has been clear due to the amount of other options the franchise has explored. The organization showed interest in Matthew Stafford, offered a deal to Sam Darnold, and is the leader in the club house to land Aaron Rodgers. DeFabo spoke about how far down the list of options Wilson truly is. "He can't be too happy about the way that things have gone, where initially he had to feel going into this situation that it was either him or Justin." DeFabo said. "Now you're going, if you're Russell Wilson, 'Wait a minute, you didn't get Justin, then you explored Sam Darnold, you thought about Matt Stafford and maybe offered him a contract, now you’re talking to Aaron Rodgers. How far down the list do I fall?'" The veteran quarterback would probably want to play elsewhere after how the 2025 offseason has gone. Including Fields, the franchise has explored four other options outside of Wilson. He now knows he is nowhere near the quarterback the organization wants, which points to him wearing a new uniform in 2025. Steelers Will Have A Lot To Do With Where Russell Wilson Plays In 2025 Both Wilson and Rodgers are in play for the New York Giants, but Wilson probably won't be able to find a new home until Rodgers signs somewhere. Rodgers is the first option in both Pittsburgh and New York, and if the Steelers sign Rodgers it is highly likely that Wilson becomes a Giant. The Steelers are still waiting on a decision from the veteran, but him spending six hours in the team's facility on Friday points in the direction of him ending up in Pittsburgh, and Wilson going to New York.
As of now, the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback for Week 1 is shaping up to be Kenny Pickett. That is after Deshaun Watson, who is entering the fourth season of a five-year, $230 million deal, had surgery in January to repair a re-ruptured Achilles injury. Pickett has not lived up to his status as a first-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2022 NFL draft. In 30 career appearances (25 starts) with the Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles, he has completed 471 of 755 passes for 4,765 yards, 15 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and a 79.3 passer rating. In a video posted to the "NFL on NBC" YouTube channel, Pro Football Talk analyst Mike Florio predicted that the Browns will sign one-time Pro Bowler Carson Wentz to fill in for Watson. "I think Carson Wentz will be the one that they bring in to ultimately win the job at a time when they need cheap quarterbacks because they've got so much money and cap space still tied up in that albatross of a Deshaun Watson contract," Florio said. "The single worst transaction in NFL history, and that is not an exaggeration." The last time Wentz started at least 10 games in a season was in 2021 with the Indianapolis Colts, where he proved to be a viable option, completing 322 of 516 passes for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 94.6 passer rating. Since then, though, he has bounced between three different teams not getting much of a chance to prove himself with 13 appearances and nine starts, completing 201 of 319 passes for 2,036 yards, 13 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and an 81.7 passer rating. If Wentz can return to being the same player from just four years ago, he could be a bargain for the Browns to replace Watson with, as Spotrac places his market value at just $1.9 million annually.
The young defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens, Arber Xhekaj, had a lot to say during his post-game press conference. As you know, the tough Xhekaj dropped the gloves with Keaton Middleton last night, a big defenseman for the Colorado Avalanche and it seemed to be a major spark for the Canadiens' comeback. Arber Xhekaj adds more during his press conference The Sheriff mentioned that the players said to each other on the bench before the fight that they needed 'something' to bring some life to the team and the arena. When he saw Middleton going after Josh Anderson, his teammate who's playing through a serious injury, he didn't hesitate for a second. We know what happened next. It's surprising, but everything was relatively planned and everything fell into place for that fight to happen. 'It's incredible what we did in that 3rd. We were so close to blowing the roof off the place, it got taken away pretty quick there in the shootout but we're proud of each other. You thought we were out of it for a second but it's like 'we ain't go away boys.' We believe in each other and we believe in this group. It was a special game. We don't really care who's on the other side. We're not afraid of any team here. We love our game against anyone. Obviously it's good to see how we can compete against that team but we don't care who's on the other side.' - Arber Xhekaj Arber Xhekaj on his fight: 'obviously we needed some life, it was kinda quiet in there so I wanted to get the boys going and get the building rocking a little bit so I did what I could.' Bottom line: Xhekaj knew exactly what he was doing, and we love to hear that. His plan clearly worked. Despite the shootout loss, the team picked up a massive point in the standings.
The second round of the 2025 NCAA men's basketball tournament concluded on Sunday, and we are now onto the Sweet 16 where No. 1 seeds and the SEC are dominating the field. Here are some of the biggest winners and losers from Sunday's Round of 32 action. Winner: No. 1 seeds keep following the chalk Not only are all four No. 1 seeds on to the Sweet 16, but outside of Florida getting a scare from UConn on Sunday, and Houston getting a tight game from Gonzaga on Saturday, all of the No. 1 seed games through the first two rounds have been more of a formality than a competition. It is not uncommon for at least one No. 1 seed to get knocked out in the Round of 32, but it did not happen this season. They are all moving on. Loser: UConn's three-peat attempt The Huskies carried a 13-game NCAA Tournament winning streak into Sunday's game against No. 1 seed Florida, and deep into the second half looked like they had a chance to continue that and keep chasing their third consecutive national championship. But Florida ended up putting together a late surge to put the game away, 77-75, thanks in large part to some big shots from Walter Clayton Jr. UConn clearly did not have the same juice that it had the past two seasons, but the fact it made it through to the Round 32 and pushed one of the top seeds in the tournament to the brink is a testament to how clutch and good this team is, and difficult it is to beat in crunch time. Winner: The SEC The SEC already made history at the start of the tournament when it put 14 of the 16 teams in the conference into the tournament. Now seven of those teams are moving onto the Sweet 16, setting a new record for most teams in a conference to appear in the Sweet 16. The SEC was widely regarded as the best conference in the country all season, and it has not only proved it during the tournament, it has also validated the selection committee for taking so many teams. Loser: Cinderella runs If you are a fan of the double-digit seed going on an extended Cinderella run deep into the tournament, this is not your year. With Sunday's losses by No. 12 Colorado State and No. 10 New Mexico, we only have one double-digit seed advancing to the Sweet 16 — No. 10 seed Arkansas. It is also really difficult to call a team coached by John Calipari a Cinderella team. Winner: Derik Queen, Maryland Queen, a Baltimore native, stayed close to home to play his college basketball and it could not have been a better story for him and the Maryland Terrapins on Sunday in their 72-71 win over Colorado State. Not only did he finish with a team-high 17 points, but he also hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer. Did he travel? You can debate it. Did he fight through some tough defense to get off a great shot in a huge moment? Absolutely. This tournament has not had a lot of dramatic finishes, but this game delivered.
