Four days after the UConn women’s basketball team won its 12th national championship in program history, one of its young guards decided to opt out. On Thursday, sophomore guard Qadence Samuels entered the transfer portal, per Talia Goodman of On3Sports. Samuels finished the season averaging 1.3 points and 5.1 minutes per game. Last year, Samuel had a solid freshman season with UConn, averaging 5.1 points and 12.9 minutes per game. She was part of a UConn freshman trio that carried the Huskies during the NCAA tournament when other players were injured. The other two being Ashlynn Shade and KK Arnold. Her most significant moment came in the 2024 Elite Eight against USC. She hit a crucial 3-pointer while playing strong defense that carried the Huskies into the Final Four. Besides providing some offensive spark off the bench, Samuels didn’t generate as much playing time this year due to UConn’s depth in the backcourt. The biggest thing for her is being able to get more playing time. Now that she has entered the portal, who will be the program that will give her what she wants? The possibility for Qadence Samuels to play at home Samuels is a native of Forestville, Maryland. She graduated from Bishop McNamara High School and was selected by UConn as the No. 41 pick in the class of 2023. Is it possible that she could find her way back home and play for Maryland? Her skill set and budding potential meets their particular needs. Coach Brenda Freeze is actively seeking transfers and replacement players in the guard position. Maryland lost Shyanne Sellers and Sarah Te-Biasu and picked up transfer guard Yarden Garzon and center Gracie Merkle. Maryland is also seeking to strengthen its backcourt. A fitting position for Samuels to be in considering her limited play in recent memory. Plus her experience playing for UConn certainly helps, not to mention the fact that Maryland has always been a program that has produced some standout talent (i.e. Angel Reese). Samuels will also be close to family, which helps to make the experience more comforting. She brings a championship pedigree and signs of promise. It is a just a matter of when she can fully shine.
Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, was drafted 55th overall in the 2024 NBA draft. Spending one season at USC, James joined his father on the Lakers. Appearing in 24 games for Los Angeles this season, James has averaged 2.3 points in 5.7 minutes per contest. That said, the 6-foot-3 guard has found much more success in the G League where he made 11 regular season appearances for the South Bay Lakers. In those games, James averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists (via G League Stats). With the G League season over, James will remain with the NBA team for the remainder of the year. Los Angeles is facing the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night in the front half of a back-to-back. The Lakers will play the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center on Wednesday. Ahead of their game in OKC, the Lakers listed Bronny James as questionable with an illness. The team has since announced the unfortunate news via their official injury report that he has been downgraded to out. This news is especially unfortunate for James, because assuming the Lakers end up sitting multiple rotation players in this game, he could have received extended minutes. James appeared in LA's last contest, scoring three points in two minutes against OKC on Sunday. Just two appearances removed from a career-high 17 points against the Milwaukee Bucks last month, James has shown flashes of ability at the NBA level when given extended minutes. Unfortunately for him, an illness has removed the opportunity to do that again on Tuesday.
The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation has been the story of the offseason. The team has gone all-in on pursuing 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers, with all signs pointing toward him being the Steelers' starting quarterback for the 2025 season. However, even with Rodgers' potential arrival, Pittsburgh must look beyond the immediate future. As the franchise prepares for the possibility of a 2025 season with the future Hall of Famer, they must continue evaluating young quarterback talent. This is why the Steelers are doing their homework on top quarterback prospects in the 2025 draft class. Pittsburgh recently hosted Shedeur Sanders, a highly regarded quarterback in this year's draft, for a predraft visit. While the move seemed routine — a chance to assess the talent available — it has sparked more speculation within NFL circles about the team's long-term plans at the position. The Steelers know they can't focus solely on one season and need a strategy that ensures long-term success. NFL insider Ian Rapoport recently shed new light on the situation during an appearance on "Good Morning Football." Rapoport suggested that the visit to Sanders wasn’t just about evaluating talent — it was also a clear message to Rodgers. According to Rapoport, the Steelers are essentially telling Rodgers to make a decision quickly, signaling they aren’t willing to wait forever. The move not only shows their due diligence but also hints at a sense of urgency regarding the team's quarterback situation. "I don't think this is a message to Aaron Rodgers," Rapoport said Wednesday. "The Steelers don't need to do that. But if it was, I would say the message is you are now on the clock. Because the Steelers have been very patient with Rodgers. Free agency was a thousand years ago. It was so freaking long ago." Rapoport began by carefully hedging his remarks, as most insiders do when discussing Rodgers. Rodgers is known for keeping his plans close to the vest, and he enjoys the fact that few insiders can get a clear read on his next moves. However, Rapoport did point out that the Steelers' actions, including the visit with Sanders, clearly signal their intent to protect themselves. It’s evident that Pittsburgh is making sure it has options, regardless of what Rodgers decides. "By the Steelers bringing in Shedeur Sanders, they made two points," Rapoport said. "One, if Rodgers doesn't come to the Steelers, they're probably going to have to draft a quarterback somewhere. And the other part of this is like, 'Rodgers, if you tell us after the draft, we're gonna have to protect ourselves.' So he's a little bit on the clock too." In the case of Rodgers, many Steelers fans are growing frustrated with the prolonged waiting game. They believe Rodgers has had more than enough time to make his decision and is simply dragging it out to bask in the spotlight. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen, but one thing is certain — this Pittsburgh roster, with Rodgers at the helm, could certainly be considered a contender. Waiting on Rodgers is hurting the overall roster The message here is clear. If Rodgers announces he's joining the Steelers soon, Pittsburgh can shift their focus to adding talent and addressing roster needs in the draft. However, if the team continues to wait and speculate on his decision, it could cost Rodgers a valuable weapon for the 2025 season, potentially delaying their path to contention. Art Rooney II made a direct statement, emphasizing that Pittsburgh isn’t willing to wait forever. The Steelers are clearly growing weary of the Rodgers saga, and his indecision may have already had an impact on their offseason plans. Rodgers’ reluctance to make a decision has likely hurt the team in free agency, as potential signees may be hesitant to join a team without clarity at quarterback. Regardless, the message is simple: The sooner Rodgers commits, the better it will be for Pittsburgh’s chances of adding talent and building a competitive roster in the draft.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have rolled without Freddie Freeman throughout April. The first baseman is dealing with an ankle ailment. Now, Dave Roberts and company have delivered a roster move — before his return. Freeman is on his way back from the injured list. But the Dodgers pulled one other move, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register on Thursday. The defending World Series champions are clearing room for Freeman by sending one of their own down to Oklahoma City. “Dodgers sent Hunter Feduccia back to OKC. Clears a spot for Freddie Freeman to come off IL tomorrow,” Plunkett shared on X. That means the catcher Feduccia will suit up for the Comets — the Triple-A affiliate of the Dodgers. Freeman then comes over and becomes eligible to play immediately. How Dodgers fared without Freddie Freeman Freeman, again, hasn’t played with the Dodgers the moment the calendar flipped to April. He last swung the bat and wore the glove on March 29 against the Detroit Tigers. Los Angeles has gone 4-4 since his absence. The 35-year-old smacked two hits that March night. But one flew over to right center for the Dodgers’ first home run of that night to cut the 2-0 deficit. Freeman blasted a 95 mph four-seamer to hand L.A. its first points in the bottom of the first. The Dodgers eventually erased the early two-run margin to win 7-3. But how did Freeman land on IL? The Dodgers All-Star admitted a “shower mishap” left him with an ailment. Freeman slipped in the shower, which re-aggravated his previous ankle injury. The Dodgers called up Feduccia after placing Freeman on IL. Feduccia had played in five games for the 2024 champs. He impressed by hitting .333 at the plate. Now the Dodgers are making a slight roster tweak. Feduccia will likely cross paths with beloved Dodgers fan favorite Tony Gonsolin — who’s on his own way back. Gonsolin struck out seven batters for the Comets on Wednesday. The right-handed pitcher Gonsolin has Tommy John surgery last year. Perhaps Gonsolin and Freeman will return to the dugout together before Easter or the end of the month.
