Breaking Down the Rockies’ Spring Breakout Roster

The Colorado Rockies’ Spring Breakout roster has been released. RHP Chase Dollander and outfielder Charlie Condon, Nos. 25 and 29, respectively, in the MLB Pipeline top 100, lead some of the top players on the roster. The roster contains nearly all of the Rockies’ top 30 prospects, among the most in Major League Baseball, per Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com. The Rockies will play the Chicago White Sox on March 13 at 3:10 p.m. MDT at Camelback Ranch in Phoenix, Arizona. Below are some of the prospects to keep an eye on during Spring Breakout.

Looking at the 2025 Rockies Spring Breakout Roster

Dollander Leads The Pack

Dollander, age 23, the ninth overall pick out of the University of Tennessee in the 2023 MLB draft, is the Rockies’ number one prospect to begin 2025. He is projected to join Colorado this season. He has seen mixed results in his two spring training starts but shows a lot of promise. Aside from a solo homer by San Francisco Giants center fielder Jung Hoo Lee in the first inning, Dollander was great in his first Cactus League start. He struck out first baseman Lamonte Wade Jr., third baseman Matt Chapman, and second baseman Casey Schmitt in two innings of work.

He struggled in his second start against the Arizona Diamondbacks. After beginning the game with a groundout of designated hitter Ketel Marte, center fielder Alek Thomas singled. A rare fielding error by second baseman Thairo Estrada on a ground ball to second extended the inning.

In MLB, errors are often punished, and third baseman Eugenio Suárez responded accordingly with a 444-foot three-run homer to left. After a solo home run by left fielder A.J. Vukovich to begin the second inning, Dollander regained control and recorded six straight outs, including three Ks, to finish the start strong.

Rough first innings will happen when you are a pitcher in Colorado. What is crucial is how pitchers respond. The Rockies will score runs at Coors Field. If Dollander doesn’t let a bad first inning ruin his start and bounces back, it will do wonders for his Rockies career. He showed that resolve and competitiveness against Arizona while showing shutdown stuff against San Francisco. It will be intriguing to see how Dollander does when he toes the rubber in the Spring Breakout.

Outfielders, Outfielders, Outfielders

The Rockies have an impending logjam in the outfield. Star center fielder Brenton Doyle should be the Rockies’ center fielder for years to come. Left fielder Nolan Jones, first baseman Michael Toglia, and utility player Hunter Goodman all saw time in the outfield last season. Jordan Beck, who dealt with injuries last season, is also an intriguing young outfielder for Colorado. However, the Rockies have a surplus of outfield talent ready to come up in the next few seasons. Charlie Condon (No. 2), outfielder/shortstop Cole Carrigg (No. 3), and outfielder Robert Calaz (No. 4) will all be at the Spring Breakout.

Condon, age 21, was the third overall pick out of the University of Georgia in the 2024 MLB draft. Jared Thomas, age 21 (No. 12), and Benny Montgomery, age 22 (No. 15), will also be participating in the Spring Breakout. Carrigg and Montgomery have received at-bats in the Cactus League this spring, while Condon and Thomas just arrived at minor league camp. Calaz, age 19, was named the Arizona Complex League MVP, due in large part to leading the ACL in a slew of offensive categories in 2024. After a promotion to Low-A Fresno, Calaz continued his strong performance. In 49 at-bats, he hit .327/.386/.571 with 11 RBI and two home runs. Considering what he has done at only age 19 since coming stateside, he will be one of the most intriguing players to watch at the Spring Breakout.

Major League At-Bats

Condon and Thomas did get some major league at-bats in an intra-squad scrimmage at minor league camp, per Rockies insider Thomas Harding. Both players saw action against Rockies relievers, left-hander Lucas Gilbreath and right-hander Anthony Molina. Condon reportedly achieved a full count against Gilbreath before popping out, and he hit a line out to left against Molina. Thomas struck out and grounded out in two at-bats against Molina. Both players talked to Harding about the opportunity to face major-league pitching.

Thomas said: “It’s awesome, this is the ultimate goal, to face [Major Leaguers] day in and day out.” “To be able to do that early in Spring Training was special.”

Condon echoed Thomas, saying, “It’s getting at-bats anywhere you can, and obviously you want them to come off the best-talented pitcher that you can get.”

Rockies fans will get to see both during the Spring Breakout. But Harding also did not rule out possible Cactus League appearances this spring, mentioning that while they still lack experience, their pedigree will help them catch up quickly. Carrigg has unsurprisingly struggled in Cactus League action, as he is still with High-A Spokane. However, he has shown flashes of his high potential this spring. The playing time he is getting in both the Cactus League and the Spring Breakout will be invaluable for his development. Montgomery has played well in six games, hitting .333/.429/.500 with three RBI and no strikeouts in only six at-bats. Currently at Double-A Hartford, he is also expected to reach the majors in 2026.

Rounding Out the Roster

There will be some intriguing infielders on the Rockies’ Spring Breakout roster as well. Out of the eight infielders on the roster, seven are in the Rockies’ Top 30. Two players to keep an eye on are second baseman Adael Amador, age 21 (No. 7), and third baseman Kyle Karros, age 22 (No. 21). Amador saw limited time with the Rockies late last season. He should receive plenty of time to develop this season. He is projected to slot in behind Estrada at second.

While Karros is only No. 21 in the Rockies system, he has been one of the most impressive Rockies during spring training. Currently at High-A Spokane, he is projected to have another full season in the minors. But he has given Rockies fans flashes of being the potential third baseman of the future this spring. He has hit .400/.478/.500 with eight hits and five RBI over 20 at-bats.

There will be numerous high-ranking pitchers behind Dollander in the Rockies system to keep an eye on at the Spring Breakout. These include righty Gabriel Hughes (No. 16), 23 years old, who has been lights out in Cactus League play after receiving Tommy John surgery last season. In three games, he has a stellar 0.00 ERA and 0.947 WHIP over 6 1/3 IP. He has to work on his command, issuing three walks to three strikeouts. But the Gonzaga product has nonetheless been very impressive in his return to the mound. Potential catcher of the future Drew Romo, age 23 (No. 11),  will lead the catching corps at the Spring Breakout. The full roster for the Rockies is listed below.
