The Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation is currently without the likes of Blake Snell, Clayton Kershaw and Tony Gonsolin, with only one of those an expected scenario when the season began.

While Kershaw re-signed with the Dodgers for an 18th season, he has been viewed as a likely midseason addition after undergoing surgery to his left knee and left toe.

The future Hall of Famer started throwing bullpen sessions during Spring Training and mentioned June as the rough target for his 2025 debut. Kershaw’s recovery has continued to go well and he’s faced hitters multiple times.

However, the 37-year-old also recently remarked there was a balance with his progression because of the healing process from toe surgery. Kershaw otherwise remained encouraged by the overall recovery and that his left shoulder has remained in good standing throughout.

Kershaw underwent left shoulder surgery after the 2023 season to repair the glenohumeral ligaments and capsule. That prevented Kershaw from making his 2024 debut until July 25, but he managed to make just seven starts last season because of the bone spur in his left toe.

Clayton Kershaw starting rehab assignment

Even with some patience needing to be exercised, Kershaw is primed to take another step forward in his recovery by starting a rehab assignment on Wednesday.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he believes Kershaw’s start will come with Triple-A Oklahoma City, but the team had not fully decided on which Minor League affiliate just yet.

Last year, Kershaw made one rehab start for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and two with Oklahoma City before joining the Dodgers’ rotation.

Kershaw is currently on the 60-day injured list, which will require the Dodgers to make room on their 40-man roster in order to activate him. The earliest Kershaw can be reinstated is May 17.
