As the Arizona Diamondbacks prepared for their series opener against the San Francisco Giants on Monday, they received encouraging news regarding catcher Gabriel Moreno. The Gold Glove recipient underwent an MRI that came back “fairly unremarkable,” according to manager Torey Lovullo.
Moreno, who had just returned from the injured list last week, exited Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth inning due to adductor tightness. At the time of his departure, the Diamondbacks were leading 8-0, but the game took a disastrous turn as Arizona surrendered its largest lead in franchise history, ultimately falling 10-9 in a heartbreaking loss.
Lovullo stated that Moreno is considered day-to-day. Although he was not included in the starting lineup against the Giants, Moreno is available off the bench if needed.
Also absent from Arizona’s starting lineup is Ketel Marte, who had homered in three consecutive games. Lovullo decided to give Marte a rest day but noted that the infielder is expected to start in the team’s final five games of the season.
The Diamondbacks enter their series against the Giants holding a two-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for the final Wild Card spot. On a bright note, for the Diamondbacks, Atlanta plays the Mets in a three-game series, meaning one of the final Wild Card contenders will be beaten up by another.
