Veteran MLB relief pitcher and ex-New York Mets standout Brooks Raley could be coming to a bullpen near you.
The Athletic’s Will Sammon reported on Friday that the 36-year-old Raley threw a bullpen session with “at least” 12 teams attending. Raley underwent Tommy John surgery last May, and it’s unclear when he’d be able to start a rehab assignment.
Raley quietly became one of the league’s better stories in recent seasons, going from a five-year KBO stint to a shutdown reliever. After reviving his career with the Houston Astros, he tallied a career-best 2.68 ERA over 53.2 innings for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2022.
Tampa traded Raley to the Mets following the season, and he quickly proved his strong season wasn’t an aberration. Raley recorded a 2.80 ERA and a career-high 1.3 bWAR in nearly 55 innings.
Raley threw seven scoreless innings before suffering the elbow injury.
The Athletic reported in January that both the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs “checked in” on Raley. He certainly makes sense for the Yankees, given their bullpen issues and his familiarity with the AL East.
Raley owns a 6-10 record and 4.04 ERA over nearly 223 big-league innings, and it certainly sounds like he’ll have an opportunity to further those numbers in the coming months.
