Jordan Lawlar returns after a couple of months on the IL

After spending a few months on the IL with a left hamstring strain, Jordan Lawlar returned to the diamond over the weekend.

Rejoining the Amarillo Sod Poodles in Double-A, the former 6th overall pick went 1-for-5 on Sunday, striking out twice. Lawlar played shortstop in the field.

Ranked as the No. 8 overall prospect on MLB Pipeline’s list, Lawlar has appeared in just 14 games this season. He initially missed a significant portion of the first half of the season due to a thumb injury.

According to Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo, Lawlar may return to Triple-A “soon.”

Since being drafted in the 1st round by Arizona in 2021, Lawlar’s career has been anything but smooth. His struggles began early when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury just two games into his professional debut. In May 2022, he landed on the IL for a couple of months with a back injury.

Though he made the postseason roster with Arizona last October, Lawlar failed to secure a spot on the Diamondbacks’ 2024 Opening Day roster, losing the competition to rookie Blaze Alexander.

Lawlar has played in just four games with the Reno Aces at the Triple-A level this season.
