The New York Mets have been one of the best teams in baseball this season. New York has won 18 of its first 25 games and owns a five-game lead in the National League East Division. The Mets have been dominant at home, dropping just one of their first 13 games at Citi Field.
This is despite injuries to several key players and starters. But it sounds like one Mets star will soon be making his return to the lineup this week. New York will welcome the addition of catcher Francisco Alvarez as he prepares to make his season debut this week against the Washington Nationals ( via Mets).
Speaking with reporters, Mets GM David Stearns discussed the decision New York must make on Alvarez's role upon his return.
"I think we have two catchers who we feel really good about," he said. "[Carlos Mendoza] is going to decide who plays every day and who gives us the best chance to win. We certainly think [Alvarez} is going to be a huge part of that."
David Stearns was asked if Francisco Alvarez would definitely be the Mets' starting catcher upon his return:

Alvarez has missed the entirety of this season so far after suffering a broken hamate bone during the early portion of spring training. In his career, the 23-year-old has a slash line of .221/.294/.423 for a .717 OPS.
In his absence, Luis Torrens has become New York's primary catcher. The veteran backstop has done decently, posting a .675 OPS and 92 OPS+. He has hit seven extra base hits in his 21 games behind the dish, so perhaps Avarez will add more pop into New York's lineup.
