Mets Make Unexpected Decision After Injury News

Despite their 11-7 record, the New York Mets have been dealing with a litany of injuries that have affected their offensive performance so far this season. As a team, New York is currently slashing .219/.301/.372 for a measly .673 OPS.

One reason for their offensive ineptitude has been their inconsistent play in center field. After hitting a foul ball on his shin, Mets centerfielder Jose Siri was placed on the injured list after not being able to put any weight on his leg. However, the Mets may have an unlikely replacement in center currently making his way back to the field.

According to MLB’s Anthony DiComo, primary infielder Jeff McNeil is playing center field in his rehab assignment. This decision comes just over one week after the injury news that McNeil was preparing for minor league game reps ahead of his eventual return to New York ( via SNY).

"He’s on board with it," manager Carlos Mendoza said of McNeil's unexpected position change.

McNeil has logged just three games as a centerfielder in his seven-year career. He has, however, started a combined 262 games in the outfield, so the change shouldn't be too drastic for the two-time All-Star.

The Mets are desperate for production in that spot, as current starting center-fielder Tyrone Taylor has had a rough start to the season. In 11 games, he is slashing .154/.195/.205 for a .400 OPS. He has accumulated -0.3 bWAR to begin the year.

McNeil's versatility will be a real asset for a Mets team that is plenty banged up. His switch to center will provide Mendoza with additional lineup flexibility to spark a struggling offense.
