The New York Mets completed a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Winners of four straight games, New York sits atop the National League East with a 15-7 record. One of the biggest reasons for this has been star first baseman Pete Alonso.
Signing a two-year, $54 million contract with New York this offseason, Alonso returned for his seventh MLB season in Queens. With the ability to opt-out and test free agency again after this season, Alonso is trending that way with his current production.
In 22 games this season, Alonso has a 1.171 OPS that ranks second in MLB, trailing only New York Yankees star Aaron Judge.
Earlier this month, Alonso and his wife announced in a post on Instagram that they were expecting a baby. Following Sunday's game, the couple revealed they are having a boy.
"baby alonso is a … ," the couple captioned their Instagram post while holding up a blue onesie.
Slotted behind Juan Soto in Carlos Mendoza's lineup, Alonso has provided the type of protection New York wants for its $765 million star. In addition to leading the National League in OPS, Alonso has driven in more runs (24) than anyone in MLB not named Judge.
A four-time All-Star, Alonso owns a career 136 OPS+ that ranks 11th among active hitters. His 232 career home runs rank third in Mets history, trailing only David Wight (242) and Darryl Strawberry (252). The 30-year-old slugger could sit atop that list by the time this season concludes.
