The San Diego Padres are off to an amazing start in 2025, sporting a 17-7 record, highlighted by going 12-1 in home games, while currently sitting in first place in the NL West with a plus-35 run differential.
Much of their success can be attributed to the pitching staff, which, through Tuesday, ranked third in hits allowed (157), second in earned runs (65), tied for 12th in strikeouts (199), second in opponent batting average (.203) and second in ERA (2.77).
Seeing how they stack up makes it not much of a surprise that on Wednesday, MLB announced that the Padres were the first team since the 1992 Atlanta Braves to have seven shutouts in their first 24 games.

Throughout this historic start, right-hander Nick Pivetta, whom the Padres signed to a four-year, $55 million contract this past offseason, has been the most effective starting pitcher.
In five games, he has stood as one of the best pitchers in baseball, accumulating 30 innings while allowing just 16 hits, four earned runs, one home run, seven walks, a 1.20 ERA, a 0.767 WHIP, while striking out 30 batters.
Of the Padres' seven shutouts, Pivetta has been the winning pitcher for three of them, including their most recent 2-0 victory against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.
Of course, the bullpen is another huge piece to puzzle, with closer Robert Suarez, who is in his third season of a five-year, $46 million contract, proving to be the most vital piece
In 11 appearances for the Padres this season, Suarez has pitched 11 innings, allowing three hits, two walks, an ERA of 0.00, a 0.455 WHIP, while racking up 13 strikeouts and an MLB-leading 10 saves.
