Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. Shares Massive Shoulder Injury Update

The San Diego Padres got off to one of the best starts in franchise history during the first few days of the season, going 7-0. However, an injury to Fernando Tatis Jr is a dampener for the team that lost 10-4 to the Athletics last night.

The star right fielder suffered a left shoulder injury in the second inning as he swung and missed on a pitch. Tatis Jr instantly winced in pain as the ball passed by his bat. After aggravating his injury during a slide to third base, he exited the game at the top of the fifth.

The injury to Tatis Jr is accompanied by center fielder Jackson Merrill going on the injured list. Second baseman Jake Cronenworth also suffered a scare as he reinjured a contusion that he'd suffered after being struck by a fastball this Sunday.

Both Tatis Jr and Cronenworth will likely miss today's series finale, though both confirmed they would make the decision after waking up.

Speaking to the media about his injury concerns after their defeat, Tatis Jr was circumspect in his assessment. According to the star batter, he is confident that the injury won't linger.

“Everybody knows it’s part of the game. So it’s up to us now, how we turn the page. Just bounce back as quick and smart as possible."

“I have felt this before. I have dealt with this before, multiple times, different ways. So it’s something that we can definitely handle. … For me, it’s just let’s see how we wake up tomorrow."

Tatis Jr also confirmed - much to the relief of Padres fans - that he would not be going on the injured list (IL) for this setback.

“I’m not going on the IL or nothing like that. So, day to day so far.”

Manager Mike Shildt also appears to be largely unbothered by the extent of Tatis' injury, explaining that his removal from the field was a precautionary measure.

“[He’s] checking out medically. Everything seems to be intact, in good shape, strength good. He’s not overly concerned. So we erred on the side of caution tonight, and we’ll evaluate.”
