It’s been a rough start to the season for the Seattle Mariners. They’re currently 4-8 on the season and in last place in the American League West. They’ve been without George Kirby since the start of the season, and Victor Robles was just added to the Injured List on Monday. Now, it appears that another contributor to the Mariners could be out for a while. On Wednesday, the Mariners placed second baseman Ryan Bliss on the 10-day injured list with a left bicep tear. They recalled infielder Leo Rivas from Triple-A Tacoma. They also designated Jesse Hahn for assignment and selected the contract of Casey Lawrence from Tacoma.
Jesse Hahn
Jesse Hahn pitched in two games for the Mariners. He’s 0-1 with a 0.00 ERA. He gave up an unearned run in four innings. He’s given up three hits, three walks (1.75 WHIP), and struck out three. Hahn made his season debut back on April 5th against the San Francisco Giants, where he threw two scoreless innings.
Casey Lawrence
This will be the second stint with the Mariners for Casey Lawrence. He previously pitched for the Mariners back in 2017-18. He’s made two starts for the Tacoma Rainiers this season, posting a 4.35 ERA through 10.1 innings. In the big leagues, he’s 4-4 with a 6.75 ERA in 59 games. At the Major League level, he’s thrown 124 innings with a WHIP of 1.685. He also has 97 strikeouts and 49 walks. He’s also pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays (2017, 2022) and St. Louis Cardinals (2024).
Leo Rivas
This will be the second time that Rivas has been called up to the Seattle Mariners’ active roster. He was recently called up when Jorge Polanco went on Paternity Leave (4/1-4/3). Rivas, 27, is hitting .304 with a .429 OBP in Triple-A this season. He also has a double, two home runs, four runs, six RBI, and two stolen bases. The switch-hitting infielder made his major league debut with the Mariners last season. In 43 games, he hit .233 with a double, a triple, 10 runs, eight RBI, and three stolen bases.
Ryan Bliss
Ryan Bliss entered the season as the Mariners’ starting second baseman. Like many of the Mariners’ hitters, he has struggled to get the bat going. Though he has had a hit in each of his last five games. Bliss is hitting .200 with a run, a double, a home run, three RBI, and two stolen bases in 11 games this season. He’s being placed on the 10-day IL as the Mariners await the severity of his left biceps tear.

Andrew Friedman: Dodgers Made Progress With Studying Causes For Pitcher Injuries
The Los Angeles Dodgers accomplished their goal of winning the World Series last season despite dealing with a plethora of injuries to their starting rotation. Tyler Glasnow, Tony Gonsolin, Kyle Hurt, Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, Shohei Ohtani, River Ryan, Emmet Sheehan and Yoshinobu Yamamoto were among the pitchers who either missed a significant amount of time or the entire 2024 season altogether. That prompted Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman to acknowledge the organization appeared to have an unusual number of pitcher injuries, and it was an area they planned to research. “We’ve spent a lot of time and we’re going to spend a lot more time on it,” Friedman recently said. “It wasn’t something that we set out to say, ‘OK, we got the answer!’ “It was more to take a critical look at everything and separate out amateur baseball and things that happen before they get into our system or to a system in Major League Baseball, and then what things look like when we acquire a player. “We had a lot of different conversations and we’re going to continue to. I don’t know that we’re going to publish anything, but we feel better today than we did six months ago. And we’ll all be really disappointed if we don’t feel way better about it six months from now. “So obviously, the most important thing is for results. We’re in a results business, and we understand that. So for us, it’s about continuing to get better, hopefully with seismic leaps. We’ve spent a lot of time and we’ll continue to.” The Dodgers placed an emphasis on combatting pitcher injuries this past offseason while also bolstering the overall depth of their starting rotation. The team added Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki to an already talented group of pitchers that were returning for the 2025 season. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are expected get back the likes of Gonsolin and Ohtani this year after they missed all of 2024 due to injury. May also fell into that category and he already has made significant contributions. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, they have continued to amass injuries so far this season. Among those to have been impacted are Evan Phillips, Michael Kopech, Snell and Gonsolin. Free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers may or may not prefer to join the Minnesota Vikings over the Pittsburgh Steelers this spring. Still, there was no indication coming off the Easter holiday that the Vikings want to start Rodgers over 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy. For an article published on Monday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter indicated people with the Vikings and Steelers haven't slammed the door shut regarding a possible trade for current Atlanta Falcons backup Kirk Cousins. Cousins lost his starting job to 2024 rookie Michael Penix Jr. this past December. "Atlanta has asked for any acquiring team to pay $20M of the $45M worth of guarantees left on Cousins' contract," Schefter explained. "To date, no team has been willing to do that, and no team is expected to be willing to. But what happens this weekend -- and which franchises come out of the draft with or without rookie quarterbacks -- could influence how much guaranteed money a team might be willing to absorb on Cousins' contract. There is a feeling around the league that a team, whether it is the Vikings or Steelers, might be willing to pay down roughly $10M." While Cousins previously played well under Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell from September 2022 up until the 36-year-old suffered a torn Achilles in October 2023, Cousins also has a full no-trade clause attached to his contract and reportedly does not want a team interested in acquiring him to select a quarterback in the first round of the upcoming draft. That said, he may not have many options available to him if it's true that the Cleveland Browns aren't interested in trading for his services. One would assume O'Connell would only push for a Cousins trade if McCarthy has a rough spring as he continues to recover from the full meniscus repair that sidelined him for all of last season. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh could draft a quarterback like Colorado's Shedeur Sanders or Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart in the first round on Thursday night. Perhaps Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin could convince Cousins to relocate to the Steel City by promising the veteran he'll start over longtime backup Mason Rudolph and a first-year pro through at least a portion of the 2025 season. Dart and Alabama's Jalen Milroe are to-be rookies who have been linked with the Steelers and are considered projects for the future who should sit behind a proven starter this fall. "How much any team would be willing to pay also would influence the compensation it gives up," Schefter added about a club possibly trading for Cousins. "The higher the payment, the lower the draft compensation; the lower the payment, the higher the draft compensation. The Falcons and Cousins, who has a no-trade clause, recognize their future is not together, and how it will play out could very well be influenced by this draft." In short, Rodgers may not want to wait too much longer to accept any offer he's received from the Steelers unless he's willing to potentially lose that gig to Cousins as soon as the final weekend of April.
Cole Caufield Makes Hilarious Comment After Taking Massive Hit By Ovechkin in Game 1
Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield made no secret about being unhappy after being leveled by Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin in Game 1 of their series. The Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals are facing one another in the Stanley Cup Playoffs; it marks their 1st meeting in the postseason since Montreal shocked Washington in the opening round of 2010. So far, the opening matchup at Capital One Arena in Washington DC has been a physical affair. Not surprisingly, Washington Capitals captain and future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin isn't shy about throwing his weight around. Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield, who scored the Habs' 1st goal of the game in the 3rd period, was leveled by Ovechkin in the corner with a hit that sent the former down to the ice. He was interviewed by ESPN's Emily Kaplan during the intermission and, with a laugh, he made no secret about the fact that he did not recommend being on the receiving end of a hit by Ovechkin. I wouldn't recommend it. He also compounded on the fact that not only has his team been preparing for the postseason by playing urgent playoff-tyle hockey for the last several weeks, but that they must match the level of physicality that the Capitals are known to bring. We've been playing playoff style hockey for a while, so keep doing what we're doing. We need to match their pace. It's a lot of fun, they have a lot of guys that can hit and we have to bring it back to them. Caufield's goal, his 1st of the playoffs, was also the 1st Stanley Cup Playoffs goal for the Canadiens this season.
Cooper Flagg and the can't-miss NBA prospects who missed
Duke freshman Cooper Flagg is considered a can't-miss prospect and the presumptive No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft. But the NBA has had several "surefire" prospects who haven't panned out — one of them also from Duke. Zion Williamson, Duke | 2019 Williamson was a household name even before his lone season with the Blue Devils, taking a freshman-heavy team to the Final Four. But a college game where Williamson blew out his sneakers and injured his knee was a bad omen for his future career. Markelle Fultz, Washington | 2017 Fultz enjoyed a stellar season at Washington that made him the consensus top prospect, thanks to his size, athleticism and passing ability. The Philadelphia 76ers traded up to select him with the No. 1 overall pick, but Fultz suffered a mysterious shoulder injury that robbed him of his ability to shoot. Traded during his third NBA season, Fultz's career was further derailed by tearing his ACL at age 22. This season, he didn't sign with an NBA team until February. Ben Simmons, LSU | 2016 Not unlike Fultz, the decline of Ben Simmons was a combination of injury and an inability to shoot. Simmons was considered a transcendent passer with great size and positional versatility, though observers were concerned with his poor shooting and perceived lack of effort. Simmons made three All-Star teams from 2019-21, but he had serious shooting weaknesses. He refused to attempt three-pointers, and his poor free-throw shooting (59.2% for his career) caused him to avoid contact, most famously in a Game 7 playoff loss to the Atlanta Hawks. Then, Simmons refused to play for the Sixers and Nets. Thanks to his refusal to play and various injuries, he played only 107 games in his ages 25-28 seasons. Michael Beasley, Kansas State | 2008 Beasley had one of the most statistically-impressive seasons for any college freshman in 2007-08, averaging 26.2 points and leading all of college basketball with 12.4 rebounds per game. It was a serious debate between Beasley and Derrick Rose for the first overall selection, but Beasley went No. 2 to the Miami Heat. Things started badly. Beasley was fined $50K for breaking rules at the NBA's Rookie Transition Program, involving female guests and marijuana. After two seasons with the Heat, Beasley showed he could score, but he didn't pass, play defense or rebound in the NBA. Miami let him go after two seasons to clear salary space to add LeBron James and Chris Bosh. Putting up 19.2 points per game for the 17-win Minnesota Timberwolves in his third season was the high-water mark for Beasley, who was later released by the Phoenix Suns after an arrest for marijuana possession. Greg Oden, Ohio State | 2007 Oden led Ohio State to the NCAA final in his freshman year, losing the title game to Florida's dominating future NBA stars Al Horford and Joakim Noah. But he missed his rookie season after the Portland Trail Blazers picked him No. 1 overall after microfracture surgery. And he just kept hurting his knees. He hurt his kneecap late in the 2008-09 season. After 21 excellent games in 2010-11, Oden fractured his patella. Then, another microfracture surgery cost him the next season, and the next. He returned to play 23 games for the Miami Heat in 2013-14, with his career ending just after his 26th birthday. Whoever drafts Flagg needs to make sure he keeps improving his shot. But most of all, they need to protect his knees.
