Shohei Ohtani on Saturday announced some major personal news.
Ohtani announced that he and his wife Mamiko have welcomed their first child. In a statement posted to social media, Ohtani said he is “so grateful to my loving wife who gave birth to our healthy beautiful daughter.” The Los Angeles Dodgers star added that their newborn baby “(makes) us very nervous yet super anxious parents.”
Ohtani also thanked the Dodgers for their support, and for the medical professionals involved in the birth.
Ohtani had announced last December that he and his wife were expecting their first child. He had only confirmed his marriage early last year.
The superstar is not with the Dodgers on their current road trip as he was awaiting the birth of his daughter. It is unclear when he will return to the team, as they are playing in Texas over the weekend and face the Cubs in Chicago for two games starting Tuesday.
In 20 games so far this season, Ohtani is hitting .288 with six home runs and five stolen bases. The Dodgers won without him on Friday night, but they certainly will not want to have to go without him for too long.
