Arizona Diamondbacks Jake McCarthy continues to improve as he enters his fifth season. With his enthusiasm and passion to be better, he certainly influences his teammates with his style of play.
McCarthy was one of the Diamondbacks most consistent hitters throughout the 2024 season. He played in a career-high 142 games and hit .285. He displayed an ability to hit the ball in all areas. He even showed off his speed on the bases with 25 stolen bases. While he was consistent on offense, his defense was also stellar, playing all three outfield positions and showcasing a surprisingly strong arm.
Arizona Diamondbacks Jake McCarthy continues to improve after coming off a challenging 2023. He struggled at the plate and ended his season with a demotion to Triple-A Reno. Then just as the Diamondbacks were making their World Series run, an oblique injury ended his season early and kept him from postseason play.
Last season during camp, there were questions as to whether he would be in a reduced role or even make the Opening Day roster. With Alek Thomas, the everyday player in center field, McCarthy competed with Pavin Smith for the fourth outfielder role. That would have meant an occasional start and a role as a late-inning defensive replacement.
After an excellent camp, McCarthy did win a spot on the Diamondbacks 2024 roster. Then, an early hamstring injury to Thomas opened the door for McCarthy to start more often, allowing him to showcase his abilities. He had an excellent April with a six-game hitting streak and a .295 average. When it was announced that Thomas was out for a prolonged period, McCarthy became the full-time centerfielder.
Jake McCarthy continues to improve and not only values what he has done but also recognizes the importance of getting better. During Spring Training, he mentioned he wants to be patient and more selective at the plate. McCarthy also wants to be a well-rounded hitter and increase his homerun production.
Known for his smart base-running and his overall speed, McCarthy has 74 stolen bases over the last three seasons. Looking to steal 30 bases or more has been set as a goal for this season. He knows those chances will come if his attention to hitting continues to be there like it was last season.
While Jake McCarthy has a guaranteed spot on the Opening Day roster this season, a healthy Alek Thomas means there’s no guarantee he will be in the lineup at centerfield every day. McCarthy, however, is flexible and has demonstrated his ability to play all three outfield spots well. He will get to fill in on a regular basis, allowing him to hone both his offensive and defensive skills. As he continues to improve, he will be an important and vital part of this Diamondbacks team for the 2025 season—and maybe beyond.
