What to Expect from Twins Infielder Luke Keaschall

The Minnesota Twins scored 66 games over their first 19 games, putting the team in the bottom third of the Majors. Minnesota will hope prospect Luke Keaschall will give the team a spark, as the Twins have reportedly promoted the 22-year-old to the Majors for his debut.

A Look at Keaschall

Twins prospect Luke Keaschall hit over .300 in both 2021 and 2022 with the San Francisco Dons. However, Keaschall had his best college season in 2023 after transferring to Arizona State, as the now-22-year-old hit .353 with 18 home runs in Tempe.

That performance got Keaschall drafted 49th overall (second round) by the Twins in July 2023.

Keaschall did nothing but hit during the 2024 season, as he hit a combined .303/.420/.483 (.903 OPS) with 15 home runs and 37 extra-base hits. He also tallied 23 stolen bases. The 22-year-old slashed .261/.379/.348 (.727 OPS) with a home run and two extra-base hits with St. Paul (AAA) before the promotion.

The Twins prospect doesn’t miss much at the plate. Keaschall also whiffed 20.9% of the time while in St. Paul against advanced pitching, and just 10.2% of the time against fastballs. It’s not a shock, as Keaschall had a knack for making consistent contact in the Minors.

He only struck out 80 times last year over 102 games. And in the spring as a non-roster invite, Keaschall struck out only once over 12 contests in the Grapefruit League.

As for the rest of his toolset, Keaschall likes to put the ball in the air. He made most of his outs in the air (.69 GO/AO), and generated power and loft, even though he hit for more contact than home runs. There’s not a lot of moving parts in his swing, as he’s ready to go from the onset, and it’s not particularly long.

Lastly, Keaschall worked pitchers. He averaged 3.88 P/PA last year, showing an advanced approach.

Defensively, Keaschall played all over the field in the Minors. Keaschall spent time at first, second, third, as well as center field. However, Keaschall spent all of his time in the field defensively at second this year. That’s notable, as the 22-year-old recently recovered from Tommy John surgery he had last summer.

The New York Times reported the news of Luke Keaschall’s promotion.

Analysis

The Twins are dealing with their share of injury problems. Royce Lewis is on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, while utilityman Willi Castro left Minnesota’s game on April 16 with oblique tightness. Additionally, the Twins placed Matt Wallner on the injured list with a hamstring problem and added corner infielder Jonah Bride.

What happens with their injured players could dictate how exactly the Twins utilize Keaschall. He’ll likely play every day while he’s with Minnesota and could fit in in a variety of ways.

Keaschall, since he’s playing the field again, could platoon with Edouard Julien, who had hits in eight of his previous nine games but struggles against left-handers. He could also slide in as a DH, as Trevor Larnach — who had 10 games there — is hitting .180.

The 22-year-old, as noted, worked counts and punched his way on base with hits — which the Twins could use at this moment. As of April 17, the Twins were 26th in the Majors in on-base percentage (.284).
